Oh deer

North East Hants Branch of the Woodland Alliance launched an attack this
afternoon. Tough little devils, deer, aren't they. Trundling along quite
happily at a "good pace" when a deer ran into the road from my right.
Don't know what happened next to be honest. Apart from there was an
impact and my toes started to hurt.

I remained in control of the machine and pulled to a halt a few yards
further along the road. Somewhat surprised. As you might imagine.

Damage to me: not a lot it seems, though in the morning I fully expect
bits to ache. The deer and I collided but it was a side impact. I was
very lucky not to have been sent flying.

Damage to bike: offside peg hanger plate snapped off (so peg is attached
    to plate but the plate is suspended by the rear brake fluid line;
offside pillion peg bracket is broken, sizeable flat area on the
previously circular exhaust and, upon inspection, it became clear that
the can was actually pushed to make contact with the rear tyre (better
than being pushed to make contact with the front I suppose).

I could just buy the parts and bend the exhaust so it is back to its
original position but a part of me is calling out "get it checked by a
Triumph dealer" to make sure e.g. there is no damage to the frame. Am I
being too cautious? Is it possible for an impact that didn't even have
me off the bike (principally owing to my mastery of the machine) to have
    caused unseen damage like that?

I must have it ready for TOG-2007 on May 4th....

  4. Unlikely. Bend it back. See if the bike steers OK hands-off. If it does,
    then stop worrying.
Spare bikes supplied for those whose own mounts are u/s.....

Many years ago the same band of ruffians sent a baby deer out to
collide with my car on the M3. It was only little, and I was only
doing about 70 (but it was an Allegro!) still, it wrote the car off,
and the AA wouldn't even let me retrive the animal from the central
reservation in part payment for the totalled wreck.

    I'll have the red Sprint!

On closer inspection I have determined that I can repair it myself. The
hangers (if that is what they are called) for the peg and the pillion
peg need to be replaced - the latter looks like it might be a fiddly job
it being mounted to the frame behind some of the bodywork.

Another reason for DIY .... my insurance excess is £500. Funny how you
never think about what the excess is until you contemplate a claim.

Well, in my defense, I didn't have a car at the time and I was
threatened by my mate that at £60 for a 1-lady-owner car I should bite
her hand off. It was actually OK - my first car with 5 gears :) I
went from Camberley to Bournemouth many times without incident until
    the deer got me.

I once bought a Maestro for a bet at the local car auctions (£23)
which got me around for many months before I sold it for a profit.

I've never been a good judge of things with wheels - my first "proper"
bike was a Honda CJ250T which I actually liked and did over 40k miles on.

    Another one !

Bugger, do be careful Mr O.

I had a deer jump out on me when on the Blackbird a few years back.
Thankfully i was aware of the skittish beast as I came up to it, so
    had slowed up a bit.
I would have had a spare, but ...

Looks like we'll be comparing war wounds !

    Cheers,

    Paul.

My nemesis was my Marina 1.8TC, the 'TC' designation being positively
    prophetic as a car choice.

It almost ended its days wrapped around a stone gatepost in the lake
district, due to the fact that its hugely powerful engine (!)
outstripped its torsion bar front suspension and legendary lever arm
    dampers.

I jacked out the front of the car, put on a new grille, pushed the
water pump spindle back out, put on some bonnet pins, and it lived for
    a few months more.

The joys of motoring on a budget as a 17 yr old.

Yep. It was a strange one, since it went through the No:1 hall at
Frimley (usually reserved for top-end cars) as it was a council repo.
Steering lock was broken, but it had tax and MOT. Some blokes up in
the restaurant bid £1 for a laugh and I bid against them until they'd
    had their fun.

I tried to avoid stuff like that by having loads of Hillman Avengers,
which I liked, except I slept in one for nearly a year and it's not
much fun when the seats don't recline. I slept out a lot.
