    You realise that you're not going to win the argument then?

    I also didn't realise you were thinking about following the 'proud UKRM
    tradition' but seeing the use of smilies I suppose the evidence has
    always been there if I'd stopped and thought.

    Probably not, but lots of them have lost it.

    I once saw it explained as "Would you prefer to be thought of as one of
    the few intelligent posters or one of the less intelligent posters to
    this froup?"

    Fucking terrible example, but amusing nonetheless.

  11. The Swiss weren't quite sure what to expect of the film "Die Hard".
    (Hard being Swiss German for a piece of open land; a small one is "Hardli"
    found in several places on my local area's OS-equivalent map.)

  12. Unconfirmed urban myth [well, more rural myth, tbh]. In the 60s a drive-in
    movie manager in the middle of Septica was putting together an all-night
    horror programme for the college-kids. He came across a film whose title
    sounded promising in its very starkness, and ordered it sight-unseen. So it
    was that at 3.00 in the morning they found themselves enjoying a film which
    the manager thought was called "Die, Fledermaus".

    I tried to find a way of piping all of a news spool into the shell but
    failed.

    $ `cat /var/spool/news` | sh -s
    $ `cat /var/spool/news` > -
    $ sh -c `cat /var/spool/news`

    All stop after the first line.

    I've no doubt there's a simple way of doing it, feeding it in a line at
    a time, or telling 'sh' to ignore errors (until it gets to a random
    line that starts with a valid unix command).
