BBC news article tonight on road charging. The usual predictable
bollocks about tracking systems and huge costs then the very last line,
    the sting in the tail.

"In the next edition we will look at how road charging could be use to
    enforce speed limits"

Am I alone in being deeply depressed by this drift towards the
    surveillance society?

    What drift?

In Britain we are likely to be caught on cctv cameras 130 times a day.
    It's already here.

It's about moving on to using it to enforce laws governing every
    minutiae of life.
I must go read 1984 again.

No I feel it too. Well, not *deeply" as such but I am very concerned
about our civil liberties and the civil service's (?) ability to keep
all that data only where it belongs. Very comforting to know that other
people might hack into some database somewhere to determine that you're
200 miles away on holiday at the moment....and therefore not going to
disturb them whilst burgling your home.

Welcome to V for Vengance brother :)

I've been increasingly pissed off with it for years, it's a kind of creeping
paranoia that's escalating, but feels orchestrated. I have friends who are
talking of emigrating to New Zealand 'cos they reckon NZ is 20 years behind
the UK and in another 20 years they'd rather be retiring there than whatever
    this country turns into.

NZ? do you think things are much better there? it's riven by PC
attitudes too, not as bad as Canada granted.

  7. I tihnk you'll find it's closer to 300 times. ANd 70 percent of the Home
Office's enforcement budget last year was spent on CCTV - that's 500 million
    pounds.

Mud huts in Africa are looking attractive, assuming they have biult in
bars, AirCon, fast internet and good bike dealers.

  9. So, just bars, aircon and fast internet will do then?

What pisses me off about the UK's road charging, in say france you pay to
use the autoroutes, your money gets you an almost perfect surface, direct
route between cities, low traffic levels etc, and if you don't want to pay
the tolls, then your free to use the slightly more scenic roads that usually
run along side the autoroutes anyway.

But over here they want to charge us for using the same roads that we've
always used for free (well, paid for from the tax disc system) and we don't
get a choice, it's either pay to use the roads or walk through the fields,

One of the many reasons i'm seirousely considering buggering off to france
and not coming back, somewhere the sun shines and my arthritis dosent bother
me half as much, and somewhere you can still live like you want, not how the
bloody government wants you to live

In London it is, I think it's still a bit less outside London. Not that
    this makes a big difference.
They'll need to spend more to watch the watchers...

I used to think those survival nutters sitting on mountain tops in
Montana, waiting for Armageddon, were, erm, nutters.

But recently, decamping to a canyon somewhere in a place like Utah,
with a bunch of wifelets and a stack of Ak-47s, doesn't seem that bad
    an idea any more.

    <thinks>

Hang on, I'm German. All our nutters emigrate to South America. Better
    change the ticket then...

Tim's right. You wouldn't escape much for very long by coming here. The
only reasons to come here are the weather and the proximity to beaches
and associated facets. That's it. In almost every other aspect it's as
bad or worse than the UK, or soon will be.

Well you obviously know you're not alone since that's pretty much 80%
of anything anyone bangs on about in here. My civil liberties this, my
    loss of freedom that.

I'm probably alone in thinking that society gets what it deserves. If
the vast majority of people are cunts then they're going to live under
    cunty laws.
