  1. It's about 3.5 (UK) gallons. The Custom tank is half a gallon smaller.

  2. So about 3 usable gallons and .5 gallon reserve. Allowing for the fuel
consumption of the XS, which seems to be around 40mpg, that's not all
that good. I want to get a tank range of near 200miles if possible. The
GS tanks are nearly 5 gallons, but one of them would probably look gash
on it. Otoh,,, maybe not. Black tends to blend things in quite well.

do you want it to look 'standard' then ? or are you willing to make a
    few mods to it ?

  4. Mods, tastefully done, are the way to go. I envisage a metalworking
session involving hammers, angle grinders and welders. Let the sparks
    fall where they may.

What about the round GS 850 Tank or even a XS 1100 tank then ?

IIRC the XS1100 had a 24l tank, which might be bodged to fit.

  7. I might use a GS tank, if it fits well, or with small mods; but the
XS1100 tank might be the way to go since it's from the same family.
    Either might look shit enough.

  8. Bodge? I'll have you know my metalbashing skills are without equal
around here. Why, 'tis nothing to grind, hammer and weld for hours and
produce a pair of steel toecap ashtrays.

....or whip up a freehand bike trailer out of bits of angle iron in a morning
    IIRC.

The XS11 tank might look a bit big, but with rearsets, clip-ons and a little
racing seat, it might just work.

  11. A day, really; mind you there was a lot of buggering around time in
    that.
    Heh. XS Endurance.

  12. Nearer 50-55mpg, actually.

  13. That improves things slightly then [1]. A 4 gal tank would do, but I'd
not want any less than that.

[1] Assuming this heap actually returns that when it's on the road full
time. All I've done with it so far is blat around the local single
    tracks.

  14. I'm not keen on the custom style one to start with. I want a proper
tank, a tank you could take home to meet your butch brother, a tank
that's not afraid to stand up and shout '**** you, I'm a petrol tank!'.

  15. Well, that's what my last XS would do, and the one before that, and the
one before that, assuming cruising speeds of 65-70mph, which is about
all you want to maintain on an XS650, to be honest.

Upping the ante to 75+ would result in high-40s mpg.

I've still got the original which is pretty solid and not too bad. I'll
sort out some pictures if you're interested.

  18. Thanks.

Any idea of the capacity of it? I'll google later, if you don't know
offhand. Was it the standard tank?

  20. Both custom tanks, which I'm not all that keen on, although the Honda
tank looks ok, and being off the 900 might be a decent size. The Yam
    tank is 'orrible.
