I bought a little 900W genny the other week

It says to use 10/30 oil, I've got some SAE 20 fork oil lying around,
    should that be OK ?

on the basis that I have some ion the shelf and after 8 hours of running
    it in, it'll want changing

You want this genny to start when needed and then run until it isn't,
    yes?

    Buy some oil.

Don't use the fork oil as engine oil. Just because the viscosity is
'similar' (and it won't be at the engine's running temp), I'm sure the
    formulation is pretty different too.
On most of the little gennys with OHV or even sidevavle engines, 10/40 will
    be ok I'd reckon.

  4. Only in the direst emergency. Buy some 10/40 bike oil, since it's a
    little aircooled job.

    Definitely, don't.

At a push, use single 30 weight lawnmower oil, that is pretty easy to
    get hold of.

10W/40 4 stroke oil is usually even easier to acquire
