Oil for the R6

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Beelzebub_on_Mac, Apr 10, 2009.

  1. Good Lord, I hear you cry - an on topic post from yours truly....

As a reward for starting today, for first time in over 2 years (and
possibly nearly 3, according to my last MOT cert), I'm going to do an
    oil change on the R6.

Can anyone please remind me what grade I want? IIRC it's semi-synth I
    need, isn't it?

    10W40 Semi synth.

    Motul or Silkolene for preference.

You could go full synth, but it's overkill.

    Cheers,

    Paul.

  3. Ta - I thought full synth could cause probs with clutch slipping?

Not if it's intended for bike use, Mobil 1 and other full synth car
oils have friction modifiers that aren't very compatible with wet
    clutches.

    <awaits oil jihad> [1]

Bike full synth oil is fine, but unless you're endurance racing, it's
    not needed for road use.

[1] Every time this comes up, we have a war with someone (Wessie ? or
someone else) who uses car oil religiously without any issues ..

What him with no sig-sep says.

Use a genuine Yamaha filter too. They aren't that much dearer but worth
    it.

Not on an R6, usually happens on some V-Twins

    With this in mind ..
.... does it matter, I'd have thought any would be better than what's in
there now. (Assuming it's actually ridden regularly)

    ;)

Some manufacturers specify fully synth for their engines, Suzuki for
one on all the GSXR range, I tend to stick with what the man who
    designed it says.

  9. I wasn't going to bother changing the filter as that was done last
time it was serviced and it's not been ridden since then, so should be
    nothing wrong with it.

Fair comment, the element inside won't have degraded, but there's a
relief valve spring in there and a rubber seal that may have suffered
over the last 3 years. A filter costs a fiver, hardly worth scrimping
    on it

  13. Yep. I'd rather do a run with fresh oil and no filter at all, than trust
an ancient filter. I've seen the elements being on the point of falling
apart on more than one occasion when I've removed them.

Not me. I *can* use car oil in my bike because it has a dry clutch. I have
been known to point out to others that they can save a few bob if their
bike is similarly equipped. Mostly to BMW owners but some Ducatis & Guzzis
    have dry clutches.

Wrong. At this point the engine overheats and seizes. Time to go into
consoling mode, looking for the sympathy shag.

At the risk of confusing everyone I don't bother with the semi synth oil and
use ordinary decent mineral stuff and change it more often ;o)

Except the GSXR which got Mobil 1.
