OK I went and got some oil and a filter today. I've gone to do the job
and I have 20w/50 oil (silkolene comp4 purchased with the filter) but on
the screw thingy it says '10w/40'.

Should I get the same oil or is that OK to use ?

As you can tell I have no idea.

It may be possible to get a definitive answer from the service manual
(depending on whether you can get it).
The owner's manual might say, otherwise you may be able to get the
    workshop manual off the internet.
Failing that, phone the dealer and ask someone in the workshop.
What is the make/model? Are you in SA?

Same here. Went to the book and it said something like 10w/40 but ended up
ringing my bike dealers and was told Shell Advance SX4 which is 15w/50

To answer all the questions, the bike in question is a 2005 Hyosung
GT250.. my alleged purpose of getting the bike was "just to ride to
work" which has shrunk to a (saddening) 3km of late since I moved. The
long way to work's 5km and goes past all the beaches so it's not all
bad. However I like it so much it gets a lot more use, I've put 5000km
on it since I got it around March.

Kinda embarassingly, to me this is a major job. I work with PCs, not
these confusing moving part things, dammit.

I've read the manual which says 1.8l of 10w/40 and so does the filler cap.
I have appropriate tools available to take off the 4 bolts I need to rip
the skin off my knuckles undoing, and something to catch all the crap.
    Basically the process is -
    warm it a little
    undo filler
remove sump nut (with probable swearing)
    drain most of it
take the 3 filter bolts off and the cover
    take out the filter
make sure there's no oil left in it
redo the sump plug (with probable swearing)
    pop in the filter
    Do those bolts up
    Fill it carefully
    do up the filler cap
    optional :
    making a mess with oil
    getting in trouble for above

    That about right ?

Just a couple of extra points

    1. replace the sump plug washer - they are a crushable sealing washer, cheap
as chips and will stop any oil leaking from the sump plug because one was
too cheap to get a new washer.
    2. Don't do the sumplug up so tight that you stand in danger of stripping
    the thread - bad juju
    3. I haven't seen the filter setup on these but if the cover plate has a
gasket either renew it (they are as cheap as chips) or use some good quality
goolie-gum to ensure that you don't leak oil from the cover plate. If the
oil filter is one of the spin on jobbies, put a smear of oil on the rubber
seal before screwing the filter on.
    4. Have a beer or glass of plonk or whaever handy - makes the job so much
    more enjoyable.

other than that you've pretty much got it sewn up.

  10. I'd add recheck the oil level after running the motor for a short while,
approx. 1 min., the new filter can soak up a fair bit of oil and lower the
    level.

People who wear latex gloves to change the oil in their bikes probably wear
condoms whe they have sex with their wives. People pay a fortune for oils to
    rub on their skin.

If you could afford one of them surely another bike was the better
    choice ? :)

OK so here's how it went down.

    Warmed the motor
Undid the filler cap and cleaned it off with a cloth nappy then put it
    down on another clean nappy.
Bunged 3 big Moccona glass coffee jars under the bike on a clean nappy
    undid the sump plug
the spanner managed to spin round and whack a jar. Lucky I had 3. (bonus
points already for not whacking my knuckles!)
Loosened the bolt and oil came out (into a jar)
Dropped the now slippery bolt into the jar that was now half full
    Cursed (more bonus points!)
Waited for an lull and placed a new clean jar under the bike
Spilt a tad of oil but it was on the nappy.
Waited for it to run dry
Sat on the bike and leant side to side to get more out
    Opened the filter cover
Spilt all the oil in there and watched it soak through the nappy
(Going by the manual there's drain for the filer itself ?? Odd)
    Cursed a good deal
Cleaned the spring and filter cover off with the clean nappy
Got a new jar and siphoned off the old oil to see the crap on the
    bottom. Anyway, no metal.
Put the old filter in the fullest jar
Cleaned the sump bolt with the nappy
Checked I had all the bits sat there clean (4 bolts, spring, cover, new
    filter and oil) all good
Replaced the sump bolt after wiping its hole (eww)
Replaced the filter and put on the cover
Chucked in a bit less oil than the book said
    Checked the level
    All good. Replaced filler cap
Started the bike and let it run a few seconds.
Sounded OK so checked the oil, a little low so I topped it up.
Thought to myself "That wasn't so bad" and turned to see the spring on
    the nappy.
    Sighed.
Undid the filter cover and watched all the golden oil run out, quickly
inserted the spring and wiped the cover and bolted it back up.
Cleaned outside of it all (and the floor now)
Started it - was OK so let it run a minute.
    No leak at all.
Took it for a run for 5 minutes and checked for a leak of which there
was a minor one. Cleaned it off and tightened the bolts about 1/16 turn.
A smear since, but I presume that's remains from the initial leak. I'll
know more tomorrow I guess but no leak or smear today.

I missed the bit where you topped up the oil again after letting most of the
new stuff out and checked the level before you went for a ride. Or was that
why there was only a small leak?

    Handle? It's a car; who gives a ****!
They can carry 5 people and are really cheap to buy, rego, insure and run.
What more would a motorcyclist require from a car?
