oil temps

  1. I'd recently added a dipstick thermometer to my '88 R100GS BMW.
I'm seeing oil temps around 250 F after extended high speed
warm weather running on the freeway. This seems a little high.

This is on a bike with about 2.5 Qts of engine oil capacity and
    a smallish oil cooler.

I calibrated the thermometer to ~210 F. in boiling water, so I
    think it's fairly accurate.

I think the carbs are reasonably well adjusted. The timing may
be slightly retarded and I may fiddle with it this weekend.
I haven't really figured out a good way to gauge how much
circulation I'm getting through the oil cooler. Compression
    seems reasonable.

How much worry is this temperature worth, what might be
influencing it and what if anything should be measured ?

    Thanks

  2. That's not high at all, don't worry about it. Nominal oil
temp for air (oil) cooled engines is 120-330 deg F.
    Kinda up to you. ;-)
