And mine, of approximately the same vintage. The Hilka metric set is
    slightly younger, but not much.

No.I use a Gravity fed and Ltr suction and most places I work have
their own,"Stencil" guns.If you do have any problems with MM gear
they's always been good to me in no quibble returns. They do have a
Parts line for replacements has been good to me as well :p

When dealing with them I always get on 1st name terms,I've found that
helps as at least they appear human ;-)

But it's not just a few quid is it?

My biggest problem with tools is losing them due to working in
awkward places, dropping them off bridges into water, dropping them
off 150' scaffold towers etc. My company will quite happily replace a
tool with a suitable alternative but they won't cough up for snap-on
under any circumstances. Using expensive tools would probably cost me
around £500 per year and it's just not worth it.

Or drop them in the sea when working in a basket hung over the side of
    an offshore platform.

I keep losing tools in attic insulation. I started using two sets of
tools. I use the good stuff for hot/normal work and the cheap stuff for
    crawling around attics.

My spannering on the bike tools are Craftsman from Sears. Less expensive
than snap-on and have a lifetime guarantee.

Do they have to dredge around the platform after you leave?

Not much point in looking but it'd be worth it if only for the laugh.

Have a look at the depth mentioned in the link below. That's the last
place I worked offshore and it was on a dive support vessel.

That's deep. Sounds like fun working on stuff like that, but I get
    seasick in a bathtub.

Bollocks. I've seen Close Encounters. The Devil's Tower is in the middle
