Making quite a few trips, I tend to keep my all my documents together in
a pack. France is the only country I have ever encountered random
roadside checks. TBF that is only three times in 30 years though.

The latest was in the car heading back to Calais quite late at night.
Just after the last toll on the autoroute a load of Gendarmes were
stopping everything (not that there were many vehicles on the road).
    They just checked our passports.

The previous occasion was o a long weekend away on the Morini K2 when we
came upon a road block on a lovely D road heading (as we found later)
for the local motards Sunday gathering place (Pierrfonds chateau near
Compiegne). This turned out to be a random breathalyser test. I had just
had Bierre sans alcool with lunch so that was OK.

The first was on a deserted D road fairly early in the morning somewhere
around Carcassone. Bored plod I guess. I had hidden the car documents
under the back seat (following having the car broken in to on a previous
trip and losing the lot when a bag was taken). I had to delve around to
retrieve them. Thought the insurance certificate would satisfy him but
he also demanded to see the 'carte gris'. What would have happened if I
hadn't been able to produce it is anyone's guess.

    i have.

h and i were bimbling along the n43 coming up to charleville-mezieres when
we were flagged down by a keuf motard. enormous proud bushy moustaches he
had, you don't see their like much these days, quite nineteenth century.
    - hold up, quoth he, if you're heading through charleville there is a
manif today and all the roads in and out are chocker. follow me! and with
no further delay he hopped on his steed and nipped off down a winding,
unmarked route through the countryside for about 10km or so, ending up at
another entrance to charleville next to the n43 exit. he then dismounted
and waved us graciously on. most well-mannered.

Sort your fucking posting style out, you fucking retard. It isn't
that difficult, even SirfuckwitTony can manage it most of the time.

See, you can do it when you want to. Apart from the random insertion
of blank lines (as above), fucktard.

It's not a valid one without both parts.

Rubbish. It may not be complete, but it doesn't make it invalid. And
as for foreign plod, they'd only ever be interested in the photo part
anyway, so no point in taking the other bit at all.

    I'd leave this.
I'd deffo take this. (Unless someone else knows of a reason not to
take it?) Some travel insurance policies require you to have it so if
you have travel insurance you deffo need it.

  11. You can work it out from the license number.. you birthdate is encoded
    in it.

Hence the middle part of my license number is 602235 which equates to
my birthdate of 23/02/65 quite easily (YMMDDY).

  12. Strictly speaking, French police are only empowered to require you to
    produce ..

    1. driving licence *
    2. insurance certificate
    3. registration documents

If the vehicle isn't registered in your name, you'll also need a letter
(in French) from the owner, authorising you to use it in France.

Many will advise you to take your passport and your credit card.
They're probably right, but if you get unlucky and the cop who stops you
wants to ruin your day, then not having the 'VL5' or whatever you Brits
call the registration card, will give him all the excuse he needs.

    D.

    * if your driving licence doesn't have a photo, then you need an extra
document with your photograph on it

  15. Congratulations, dog, you old cunning linguist. You've managed to
cram French slang, Aussie slang, British Slang, Old English, and I don't
know what else besides normal English into that one paragraph.

(For the non-Francolinguists, "keuf" is slang for police (I had to
look that one up), and "manif" is a demonstration (I believe a contraction
of manifestation, however that's supposed to be accented).

I wouldn't. When I got pulled at Dover Customs on the way back from a
French Run, they wanted to see it. I'm sure having all the right docs
    - including the V5 - got me on my way quicker and avoided any toe-
    touching antics.

I suppose if I didn't have one or had just a photocopy, it wouldn't
have been the end of the world but I'd certainly have been delayed
    whilst it was checked.
