It was Orphans ride day on sunday (Mothers Day) and I went for a run
up the old road. Stopped at Mt White for a coffee and say a guy on
the new R1. It was the marone or reddy color (my pick) and I said
"You must be having fun today?" He said "No, its the wrong color and
it makes no power down low..."

So it's 180Kg with 160Hp and its got no power???

And you do get to choose the color don't you??? Or is that why there
are so many yellow bikes on the road???

Poor guy - must have been horrible for him...

But we all know that men don't care about what colour it is :)

Its actually 180 hp, the big thing about the bike is its the first bike to
    be 1kg for 1hp.
Anyone who thinks the new R1 is gutless doesn't know how to ride or should
    be riding motoGP.

Apparently the bike does 3rd gear power wheelies. I'll think I'll stick to
the R6 for a while longer

  7. "Yeah, look, it says so right in the sales brochure".

In the current TwoWheels, the R1 top-scored with 162hp (echoes of the first
98 bikes kicking out ~140), the ZX-10R got something like 158, the GSX-R1000
155-ish, and the 'Blade just below that.

They're still closer to putting out 1hp per 2kg (add 30kg of fluids and
70-100kg of rider to the 170-odd kg claimed dry weight), but it still really
is a case of "Bloody hell. What are we supposed to do with this?"

Actually, that's the second time I've heard that now. mate of mine just upgraded
from a 2003 R1 and reckons the power down low is crap. The short stroke motor should
    have been a clue...

The Blade looks as though it might have the bottom end advantage.

Anyone who thinks the new R1 is gutless
    a) doesn't know how to ride
    or
    b) should be riding motoGP.

I'll go with A and would go for 99% of R1 riders.
My 86 mod TT600 did that without me on it as did my 84 Husky 400WR
    (first watercooled model)

    I'll think I'll stick to

  10. There's 13,750rpm to play with, ffs. Anything below about 4,000rpm should be
    considered idle, not bottom-end.

I've read a couple of articles that confirm the 180 once air ram kicks in,
online but so probably Yamaha propaganda :)

Yeah very true. Too many clowns go from a 250s to a 1000cc and the R1 is
the bike off choice. I have to admit I wanted one also but after riding a
CBR 600RR at a track day I though, that will do and brought the R6 :)
After 14000 kms in 6 months I still don't know how to ride a 600 properly
and am very glad I didn't go the 1000

With tall gearing a bit more down low doesn't go astray. I'd be changing the front
    sprocket.

Tell him he should ask his mechanic to put some fuel in it for him.
Might fix the "no power" problem.
