On topic; GSXR exhaust valve

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by stephen.packer, Aug 2, 2010.

  1. So, I stuck the GSXR in for a service and got a call; "The exhaust
valve's stuck, do you want us to free it, it will cost about 20 quid in
    labour".

My response was 'yes' (after all they're also doing the shims so 20 quid
    extra won't be noticed...)

But I got to thinking afterwards, what does this valve actually do to
the performance? The bike seemed to go fine with it seized.

Throw the piece of shit out of there.

You don't see them fitted to race bikes so what's the point in having
one on a road bike you intend to ride fast? I'm always suspicious
about something that cuts in at just about the same RPM as noise and
emission testing is carried out and treat them in much the same way as
    timing retarding devices.

Changes the exhaust pressure wave to give more mid-range. Or something
    like that.

I dunno but a 1000EXUP with a working valve is a lot nicer road bike than
    one without
