Hypothetically speaking, I had a hard drive delivered to me a while back,
instead of the power cable I had actually ordered.

Checked the despatch note and packing slip, both said "Power Cable", so off
    to ebay it went ;-)

Don't use it on "High" then.

    Keep it then.

I ordered some static cling reading glasses from amazon to put on my
visor. They sent me a label maker worth 2x the glasses. It's nice it is.

  6. If it did, chances are, they'd never trace their missing unit to you.

If we find we're missing anything significant, or a customer claims
significant shortage, we go through recent orders and check things like
weights and dimensions. Occasionally we spot a double up, or half,
compared to expected , at which point we <cough> or <grovel>

  7. Well yes, but only if they're prepared to pay for the cost of picking it
up. After a certain period (6 months, I believe) you can regard it as
yours if they haven't collected it.

I had a similar situation a couple of years back - I ordered a single
10M network cable along with other stuff from my suppliers and there
arrived a pack of 5 10M cables. When I informed them they told me to
    keep them. Result.

Call me old fashioned, but yeah, I'd give them the option. I mean if I'd
bought something from them and it was delivered, then I'd have what I
wanted, so getting another wouldn't "do" anything extra, would it?

Buit you made them aware of the situation and that's all they could expect.
After that, it's down to them. I bought a set of barrels and heads for my VN
from a supplier in Germany and the parcel contained 2 barrels and three
heads all with valves, springs and cams. I didn't order them with the
"accessories", (or the third head), so I rang the people and told them. They
said "I'z not a problem for you mein herr" and that's where the whole
subject was dropped, but I let them kow their mistake.

You will worry about it. Let them know.

I ordered a roller case for a portable PA system. They delivered the case
and a new £400 PA. I called them and the said "no it couldn't happen I must
be mistaken.". It took a while to convince them but they eventually decided
to collect it. I almost wished I hadn't bothered.
