If you're going to the trouble of building a 900cc 4-cylinder DOHC motor
from scratch, why in the world would you only put 8 valves in it?

Fair enough, but once again: what's the point in DOHC for a 2 valve per
cylinder engine? SOHC will manage 2 valves perfectly well, with less mass
    and mechanical complexity.
