I've been using www.map24.co.uk for the past few months. Prior to that
I used multimap, which was fine for what I needed. So, why the change?

With multimap, streetmap, etc. you get a map on the screen. Click on
it, it zooms in or moves about - bringing the results on a new screen.

Map24 lets you scroll around, zoom in and out, jump to locations etc in
    an autoroute style. For free.

You can scroll around all of Europe, following every bit of road from A
to B. It does route planning, distances between points and address
location. In short, I think it's great. It's just had a revamp, so the
interface is a bit cleaner, and it's smoother than before.

    It's definately worth a look.

I've just done a quick google, and it doesn't show any results for a few
variants of map24.co.uk, hence this post.

  2. Interesting. I've always preferred http://www.streetmap.co.uk to MultiMap,
especially the OS map scale and the ability to display a "Large Map", but
lately the scaling options have stopped working properly. The + and - zoom
icons merely swap between streetmap scale and road atlas scale, and to get
the OS map scale you need to click the third zoom icon from the left (they
look like the outlines of little houses). Also, if you then save the URL and
try and return to it later, you will find that it defaults to road atlas
    scale. It's very annoying!

It is. I have been using it since Christo put me onto it and I love
it - it can be a bit vague about street names, but the maps are
wonderfully clear, it does a good route plan and the zooming in and
out is fantastic - the ability to pan on the cursor keys rocks a
    pretty fat one, too ;-)

I just tried it and it crashed my PC :-(

I use Netscape, and it often plays up with pages using Java. Normally
this just means it's a bit slow to load, but this one completely hung it up.

I'll try again, though, since the review is so good..

I've just tried a few routes that Autoroute was crap at and Map24 did a
    better job.

I was going to buy the new version of Autoroute. I shan't bother now.

    Result! Cheers.

How do you get it to reset a map after you stick little distance markers all
    over it?

    In a little more depth:

You can click and drag a box around an area you want to zoom to. Single
click will move the map to that point. Right click adds a marker (right
click on it to remove it again). Hold down right mouse button to grab
the map and move it with the mouse.

Cursor keys move around, + and - do zoom.

If you zoom in far enough it will show you banks, petrol stations,
vehicle dealers, shops, PO, restaurants, etc - all with as much info as
they have - quite a lot have address and phone/fax numbers.

    To do distance markers:
Click the start point, left click to add further markers wherever your
mouse pointer is. Right click to end. To clear, right click on any
waypoint to get rid of the lot.

    There's possibly a way to remove the last waypoint - I don't know. I've
gleaned my knowledge of the UI by playing with it - there might even be
    a manual.

Talking of which...how you getting on?

I *think* I've found most of 'em, but there's about 4 or 5 for wot the
internet appears to yet be told of.

I see someone's already posted to the BSEPS message board. :)

At least I've sorted out 14 for Easter, and another 8 for marathon
    weekend.

Oh, and the penny dropped about Hereford when I plotted them all on me
big wall map, to organise into groups, iyswim.

Oh, and it appears "Lum" isn't a typo, after all.

Did four local ones (Cotswolds/West Midlands) today. I hope I can
afford my map-reading not to betray me. I suppose I will have to
cross that bridge when I get to it (8, 6)..
Applecross is a hell of a way to ride with nothing to go on :(
BSEPS? Oh, BSEPS. Its not too far from me, so I can risk a
speculative trip over there or en passant to your neck of the woods.
Posting on a public BB can give the game away so I save that as a last
    resort.
I am off to Cornwall/Devon for Easter. Its one area where I think I
    know what's what.
Its only an R from E to T. I have a wall map, but I use Autoroute for
    strategy planning.
Not heard of "Lang may your lum reek!" then? Bit non-specific if you
ask me. Another one with no clues yet. I am taking the Tomintoul
Musem opening times with me. Most interesting find was a reference to
    the Monocled Mutineer.

I found a number of roads around these parts missing too. Nice user
interface and all but I can't help thinking the mapping's seriously
    lacking.

April? Blimey Owen - you've got a bit of a backlog of posts to get
    through.

I'd love a marauder's map, but outside of the fantasy world of HP I
don't think I'll find one (unless I'm outside a quantity of mindbending
    substances).

What you need is a Harry Potter map, they show all the movement of
people on them, so you can tell exactly how congested any particular
route is... I'm afraid that I don't have a website address for them...
    Try google...
