And the engine fell apart soon after starting.

Did nobody notice the 200ft tall mobile phone watched by 30 ft tall people?
I expect it was an OU prototype built on veroboard with BC109s.

Actually, you're right - I recall seeing sliding outer cowls that
reveal cascades and, as you say, use inner doors to shut off the
bypass duct downstream of the cascade, so these wouldn't be obvious
from the front. I was merely arguing for the sake of arguing.

But my first point about the fan turning too slowly to prduce such a
breeze (with thrust reversal, which I didn't make clear) still stands
    - my second point suggested that the breeze could in the real world
simply have been natural wind with a non-running engine (which I also
didn't make clear), except for the rotation of the blades, which I
'explained away' with the third point, then finally pointed out that
the whole line of reasoning was bollocks anyway becuase the breeze was
obviously supposed to be from the engine.
Not a real one, I'd say: most if not all recent large RR engines have
pointed nose cones; the pitot (intake duct) is a bit short and thus
would be poor for sound absorption and possibly aerodynamically
(crosswind idling could be a bit iffy) and the cowl has little room
for anciliaries - these usually live in a slightly thicker area under
the engine, though the ones on 737s seem to have the anciliaries
offset so the bottom of the cowl can be flattened, probably to provide
    better ground clearance.
    Of course.
