    Hi

How does the group rate the CCM 644 d/s supermoto? They look like good
value compared to say a KTM / Husky etc.

What do you recon I'd get for a '98 BMW R1100RT (53K miles) as a trade
    in?

    Cheers,

    Nick

Veggie always misuses 'supermotard' so he possibly wouldn't spot this.

Lots of supermoto bikes in speed hill climbing. Mostly KTMs, one or
two Huskys and the odd Husaberg. There is a CCM that turns up
occasionally, but it doesn't have the legs of the KTMs.

You get what you pay for. The CCM's cheap and cheerful and lots of fun,
but the KTMs and Huskies are the real thing. Decent quality suspension,
decent engines, ready to race machines.

Ah, would you like to argue on the meaning of the word supermotard?

Are you going to claim that it means superbiker in the same way as that
word is used in English? 'Cos if you are, you'd be wrong.

It means a supermoto rider. We've done this in the past when you've
used it incorrectly to describe the bike itself. A motard is just a
    biker.

    Sorry, wrong.

The French word 'supermotard' refers specifically and only to the bike.
It does not, in any way, shape, or form, refer to the rider.

I actually checked with French friends who race them. It does not
translate as 'super biker' even though that's technically where the word
    originally came from.
I use the word 'motard, not motard [1]. There's no such word as 'motard
in French as they never truncate the word supermotard.

[1] Although there's probably one or two times when I've forgotten the
    apostrophe.

I'd recommend as value for money the Suzuki DRZ400, based on the
enthusiastic feedback from two Spaniards who came from an R6 and XX.

Based on the second guy experience, avoid getting too excited. You may get
used to enter every day the parking lot of your company wheeling.
    Eventually, you may crash.

    Thanks, I think...

Weird experience for me. I'm used to having a windscreen, clocks,
idiot lights etc in view. On the R30 there is nothing - just the road
and a glimpse of front mudguard. It doesn't even have mirrors.

    Cheers

Does it have indicators? Hand signals and the lack of mirrors thing is what
I found most difficult to get used to on the ickle Honda.

    Nick Guest

Yeah. It's got indicators and threaded 'bits' on the switchgear for
    mirrors. I'll
get mirrors, as it's mostly for riding in traffic.
    Wotcha got?

A CRF 230. Cracking little bike - huge fun and something I can easily pick
up when I inevitably drop it someday. I plod along the byways near home and
am really crap on it, but what the hell.

'Motards are like that, although you should have a speedo and a couple
of idiot lights on an R30.
It should do. Everyone takes 'em off, but they do come with them as
    standard.

Wrong. That's the only thing it could refer to. It may not be a word
in common use in French, but it only has the one possible meaning.
Check again. Ask them specifically, or read any of half a dozen
magazines, to try and find an example where the word supermotard, or
just 'motard if you prefer, is used to refer to the bike.
