Optimax (again?)

    I know this has probably been well discussed in the past but for the benefit
    of me, has anyone noticed any difference in using this over standard premium
    unleaded?

    Is it worth the extra couple of pence on a tank of juice?

    Personal experience showed that my Goldwing (When I had it running) ran far
    smoother. The SOBeemer also runs a little better, although I haven't really
    clocked the mileage difference if there was any on either.
    Acceleration and engine smoothness is definitely noticeable, as was
    throttle response.
    Someone who wants to differ, offer alternative opinions, or just throw in
    their 2p worth will be along soon no doubt.

    I used it once, with the intention of seeing if it reduced carb icing in
    the Monster. I wasn't really expecting it to make a difference, but there
    really seemed to be a reduction in icing, and seemed to run far smoother.

    I had a Nova GTE that had been fitted with a big valve head by Courtenay -
    running the car with Optimax at least one tank in three seemed to make it
    much more responsive and torquey.

    For roads bikes, probably not.

    We use it on the race bike cos the compression ratio is pretty high,
    and we need the equivalent of four star.

    Molly was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
    I did on several of my Beemers and noticed a difference inasmuch as
    I got a couple more miles out of each tank. The difference was
    measuarable, but not necessarily that huge. The also ran smoother as
    well.

    It makes bog-all difference on the Pan, which is as happy on the Tesco
    juice as it is on Optimax.

    The Bimota likes it very much, but that maybe due to the unspecified
    tuning Bimota did to the engine.

    Cage-wise, the ShiteOldRover likes it due to the octane rating (it's
    got the five-star specific engine), the RX-7 gets it or similar
    higher-octane juice due to the fact that it's turbocharged and when
    you notice the difference on that engine, you can go buy another
    one...
    Not unless you need the octane rating IMHO.

    Tried it in a ShiteOldRover 414, I think it confused the crap out of the
    MEMS as it ran like a bag of nails for half the tank, then got back to
    normal. Ran really well when it was refilled with Tesco Finest unleaded.
    No, I have no explanation for that.

    Tried it in the 600f. It ran noticeably rougher. Again, smoothed out when
    refilled with Tesco fuel.

    Read a comment that it seemed to help combat carb icing. Filled the GTR with
    it. It made no difference to the carb icing whatsoever. The bike was no
    more and no less responsive than it is on its usual diet of Shell or Asda.
    No difference in fuel consumption either.

    In my experience, no. Your mileage may vary ( sorry ). It is unlikely to
    hurt your vehicle, so why not try it and then report back?

  12. Nope - unleaded is 95 RON, and 4-star was 97 RON.

    Super unleaded is 98 RON.

    A ringing endorsement if I ever heard one...

    FWIW, I was sure I noticed a difference when I had the ZZR600, but I can't
    tell on the Blackbird, especially not since the carbs were stripped and
    cleaned during the 8k service.

    transient demands, i.e. driver applies welly!.

  18. Optimax is Shell's, and they claim it is better than SU,
    with a higher octane rating. If you google for optimax
    petrol, there is a website that tells you all you could want
    to know.

    I'm intruiged now. Does the MEMS feature a knock sensor?, does this Optimax
    stuff play games with the O2 sensor?, roughly how long would it take a unit
    to recalibrate if it didn't get its usual O2 signals?. Does it advance the
    ignition until it detects the beginning of knock then hold/retard the
    advance?. I'm curious as to how it calibrates.

    Maybe it cleaned the injectors out. The last couple of gallons were consumed
    in an Italian tune up on a late night run down the motorway. Actually, that
    probably did more for it as the car was used mostly as 'Dads Taxi'
