Amazing power from one engine, look at the rate of climb in maintains. I'm surprised they can't make them bird proof by now though.

Using the patented Mavis Beacon "Hunt&Peck" Technique, Champ One of the things that always amuses me about this kind of thing is this: Imagine the scene. Hero Pilot has sat in that seat for a total of, what? 5 or 6000 hours. Not much has ever happened. Suddenly, without warning, there is "BING! BING! BONG! BINGLEY-BONG! AHOOOGAH! AHOOOOOOOOOOGAH! BAD STUFF! BAD STUFF! BING! BONG! BINGLEY-BINGLEY-BONG! AHOOOOOOOGAH! YOU'RE GONNA DIE! WAH! WAH! AHOOOOOOOGAH!" And then, *then* they announce over the RT, in *completely normal tones*: "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday..." Me? I'd be at *least* three octaves above normal. -- Wicked Uncle Nigel - Podium Placed Ducati Race Engineer as featured in Performance Bikes and Fast Bikes WS* GHPOTHUF#24 APOSTLE#14 DLC#1 COFF#20 BOTAFOT#150 HYPO#0(KoTL) IbW#41 SBS#39 OMF#6 Enfield 500 Curry House Racer "The Basmati Rice Burner", Honda GL1000K2 (Falling apart) Kawasaki ZN1300 Voyager "Oh, Oh, It's so big" Suzuki TS250 "The Africa Single" Honda ST1100 wiv trailer
From Feb '02 ... "On a tangentially related slant, when Linda and I flew to Egypt on our honeymoon, the starboard engine on our 737 failed. Loudly and smokily. "what was that?" said everyone. As I could see it from my window seat, at the back (fags), I replied "the engine's just gone bang". Calm as you like. No bravado, just matter of fact. Mayhem ensued, and I genuinely could not understand why. We turned round, and returned to Luton, whereupon we were chased up the runway by firetrucks, and meat wagons. Again with the hysteria. To this day I don't know *why* I didn't join in. I simply was not concerned to the outcome." -- | ___ Salad Dodger |/ \ _/_____\_ GL1500SEV/CBR1100XXX/CBX1000Z |_\_____/_| ..89938../..25562.../..31896. Wicked Uncle Nigel wibbled: and shit does happen - one of the cylinders on a mates Cherokee 6 let go, fortunately with enough altitude to divert safely. It was quite an interesting 12 minutes apparently.
We were working on a project looking at CD ROM Media egress from high speed drives (exploding CD's) a few years ago, and hired some bod in Oxford to do some high speed filming of the drives at egress point. He had been doing some filming for an engine (or blade mfr) a few months before he did our work. They launched dead chickens into these things for testing purposes. He said the effect was amazing, the blades didn't shatter but flexed/bent out of the way, which I found pretty amazing for a bit of metal that's turning at a fair ol' rate of RPM.
They've been doing this for the last fifty years, at least. _Sometimes_ they just flex and move out of the way, and of course the designers will try and make them do just that if they can, but above a certain size/weight, depending on the engine, of course, they will break. When they do, the next design feature you want is that of containment, such that all the bits get kicked out of the back rather than exiting through the sides... Then of course, there's the old story of one young lad who was sent out to get some more test chickens from the local supermarket and came back with a frozen one, with rather interesting consequences... -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'. ....like this: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1644738/posts I like how in the bottom picture the bit of engine sticking out of the cowling was actually from the other engine, and has passed through the fuselage to get there.
....and they get the radio protocol stuff right. He's probably used the radio for yonks without once needing to prefix with Mayday, then he starts doing it without once forgetting. Incredible. Never mind the guy in the plane. If I was just in the tower I'd be shitting myself.
All credit to the guy. OK so they train for bird strikes during take off as it's the most common time for it to happen, but he dropped into the emergency mode perfectly and landed heavy with no trouble. I've had a bird strike in a Condor[1] during take off. It hit the prop. I had to fly a couple of circuits to get the bird blood and guts off of the wind shield so I could see to land.
