It's actually (at least AFAICT) quite hard not to get them. OTOH they don't seem to add much to the price any more. Lots of the other stuff I agree. Built in things (like espresso machines) worry me. Way too much hassle when things start leaking, plus if they break, you need to find an exact replacement when, in fact, any old Rancilio Silvia should do IIRC ours is about 5 sq m In other words 'yours is bigger than mine' -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Well obviously there's the coffee machine, the deep fat fryer, the water filter, the kettle... But the food processor, the bread machine, the microwave, are all consigned to other bits, which limits their use, partocularly the FP which needs to be lifted onto a worksurface to be used. But anyway, I don't think we have. There's really only two bits, one at 130cm, one at 110cm, plus a 40cm bit next to the draining board which is only good for having the kettle on it. There was certainly more than that in the smaller kitchen we left in MK.
We actually prefer it, as it's effectively got two full-size ovens. Most of the 'range' style have one narrower one, which is too small to fit our larger casseroles in, so completely useless, IOW. Well it all depends on the layout, I guess.
What about that wooden thing in the middle of the room? My mum managed with just a scrubbed pine table as a work surface for decades. We didn't have fitted units until 1978...
As mentioned, we've ditched the worktop microwave with one of these http://www.siemens-home.co.uk/our-products/cooking/compact-45-range/HB84E562B.html?source=browse and the kettle's going as we've got one of these: http://www.insinkerator.co.uk/products/shwt/hc-1100.aspx
They are separate units, installed one above the other. The combination oven/grill/microwave isn't full size (see the link in my reply to Ace) so it just looks like a slightly larger built-in oven.
Oh well, yeah, I guess. But no good at that height as 'work surface' per se, especially not with my back. Luxury. We had a formica top my dad built over the twin-tub washer, and a big table in a corner. There were no cupboards at all, but a step-down larder with thick marble shelves. Just as well, cos we didn't have a fridge until the early 70's either.
Interesting. I note that the Falcon's "multifunction" oven (still) doesn't include a microwave. So we'll probably fight to just keep my 20-y-o Zanussi one, or another standalone one. I really don't see the point on getting them built in. Why? And what do you do when you want a litre or more in one go? Looks like you'd need to put a jug under it and leave it running for three or four minutes... 100 cups/hour == 4 minute per litre.
that looks like it could be interesting when rolling in after a night on the Bishop's Finger. 98C when you were hoping for a nice refreshing glass of cold, oops
Yes, I think that's what he has. Stupid little thing. I could get a range in but if you opened the door, it would very nearly hit the units on the other side. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Convenience, a bit of "why not?" and as we're having a water softener installed, we have a choice of hard & soft hot & cold water. It's handy for making a quick cup of tea or coffee, or as in P's case, just a mug of hot water. In reality we'll keep the kettle in the utility area for when we need more than a cup or two, but that's not very often.
Seems like Welsh dairy stockmen were at the cutting edge of social mobility in the 1960s. When we were on the farm in Penant near Aberaeron we had a car, fridge, phone & TV.
I use two all the time. One is cooking stuff, the other is keeping warm parts of the meal already prepared.
I forsee something rather similar to this in my future www.rangecookers.co.uk/cannon-professional-1000g-with-fsd-product,2197.aspx
Ah but the rest of us didn't get farming subsidies from the government to buy all of this newfangled techno malarky.
Well quite. We actually inherited a gas one of these with the house http://www.rangemaster.co.uk/range-cooking/rangemaster-110.aspx except ours has a nice griddle instead of the 5th ring - perfect for pancakes. The two ovens get well used.
