  4. Nah, no way, it didn't submerge :)

Reminds me of the famous (and documented) exchange between a heavy Royal
Navy warship and a ditto submarine, on Arctic convoy escort duty. I
*think* it was PQ17. And the rumour was that the Tirpitz was about to
    sortie and attack the convoy.

    Something like this:

"From submarine XXX to Flag Officer commanding: in the event of attack
by enemy heavy units, intend to remain on the surface."

"To Flag Officer Commanding to submarine XXX: so do I."

Hot Damn! So the lifejacket under your seat might actually get used
for its intended purpose instead of simply getting flattened when the
row of seats it's still attached to impacts the sea surface amid half
a square mile of random splashes, which is what I always supposed
    happened to them.

This was a calm, if rapidly flowing, river, not a sea with a 5m swell.....

That's one pilot who deserves one hell of a bonus.

I wonder if he thought about upstream/downstream vs upwind/downwind
landing? Heh! The passengers got to play with those funny inflatable
boats that come attached to the doors! Top quality.

<peers at picture> Hmmm, don't get many people on those do you? I'm
sitting next to one in future.

Where he showed his class was in walking up and down the aircraft
twice to check that everybody was off before he left.

    That was my thought too.

I was on a flight with a colleague last month, and during the safety
demo, I remarked that it was all a waste of time as there's little
chance of survival if a plane crash-lands[1] on water. I think I might
    change my attitude now.

[1] From what I heard on the radio this morning, this wasn't really a
crash landing. An eye-witness said that if you hadn't known it was the
Hudson River, then it looked like a plance just landing normally but in
    an unusual place!

It's the largest with a 100% success rate though. And the worst injury
    was two broken legs.

Of course, and this is the most important thing, it ditched within a
few hundred feet of Manhattan, so we have loads of photos & TV pictures
    to look at.

I've said the same so many times!
I had a lump in my throat this morning listening to survivors, imagining
how they felt as it went down.
I may get religion......... for a day.

From the (admittedly few) reports I heard, it was all remarkably calm.
    Hey, steady on!
    Ah, OK.
