OK, I have a nice new 42" television to watch, a nice new Cambridge
DVD player(1) and a virgin box(2) to watch the sport, I have some decent
speakers but no Amp, what i want is a black Amp, dont need to be really
powerful, has to have a optical input so I can take the feed from the TV,
and run a LH, RH and centre speaker.

Any suggestions which I may look at and buy?

I dont want a complete cinema surround sound jobbie.

    (1) HMDI out to TV
    (2) Scart to TV

Or if there was a chance to go with surround later:

I have an older Yamaha myself (RX-V396RDS), and it's a damn fine amp,
whether for 2 channel audio, or 5.1 surround, at a bargain price. RS
still have the RX-V361, which is cheaper but only in silver left.

Pop into your local Richer Sounds. They may have some bargains about.
They'll sure as hell give you good advice.

Well I have a Yamaha DSP thingy and it's a bit big to go into the
new setup, and I have removed the rear speakers completely.

Just want some sound 'up the front' by the TV.

Not everyone actually *likes* cinema surround sound.

Just guessing but lack of room for surround speakers? Or the SO doesn't
    want surround speakers?

Fair enough. It's just I setup my surround speakers on Sunday after
being without them for 8 months since I moved here, & I'd forgotten how
much it improves the movie 'experience'.

I find it's OK at the cinema, but when sat at home watching a picture
that's just over there ->, it just seems weird to me having sounds
coming from behind me. Maybe I just need a bigger telly!

And I do realise that this is "weird" in that IRL sounds occur from
where you can't see them, but I've just never liked it when watching TV.

    Maybe it *is* just me.

    *shrug*

The RX-V363 has 2 optical and one coax digital input.

The Cambridge, almost certainly not, a DSP Yamaha should though, mine
    does.

I'd ring up Virgin and get a box with HDMI output on it as well.

I like the Morpheus rescue scene in The Matrix, you hear all the bullet
casings hitting the ground around you.

One of the best test scenes IMHO. Particularly taxing in the bass when
    the lift blows.
