Perhaps it depends. We don't have surround sound, and watch from a sofa with its back to a wall. I could see me shivering at the sound of a spider creeping down the wall behind me, less so at the sound of a missile approaching from the hall.
[..] Ooh yes. Although my own system does lack a bit in the rear speakers. I have Castle Severns as my main ones (and often don't even bother with the centre), but the rears are some cheap Missions, that probably aren't really Missions (IYSWIM?).
I know a pro film sound man who hates surround, too. -- Veggie Dave http://www.iq18films.co.uk "To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin." Cardinal Bellarmine
I shall ask my bother about this. He does sound for TV and movies and is pretty geeky on sound matters.
I can't stand it. I expect the sound to come from the thing I'm looking at. Until the visual can be as immersive as the sound, it just doesn't make sense to me.
To be honest, I dunno, but my TV Drive box has HDMI out and when I got the new LCD I just connected it with a self-supplied HDMI lead rather than the existing Scart and it worked fine. This may not apply to non-TV Drive boxes though.
That's my take on it too, which is why I don't mind it in a cinema as the screen is big enough for the picture to be "immersive", as you put it.

I've had a quick look, and I think it only does apply to TV Drive boxes (which I don't have, or want).
Because, to take Bear's example of Saving Private Ryan, the bullets and the guns are on the screen, they're not behind me. I'm looking at the screen.
Does seem odd that they don't supply an HD capable normaly box, given that a lot of the ppv content is available in HD now. Although it annoys me that you can only get the BBC HD channel and not the Discovery ones.
But if you were there, you'd still only see what was in front of you (albeit far more than you see on a screen), but you'd still hear things behind you. I just find it makes it more realistic. Perhaps it's just down to how immersed you can get in a film. I'm one of those people who gets totally absorbed & can't stand distractions, whereas the ex for example only ever treated the TV as background noise. -- Krusty www.MuddyStuff.co.uk Off-Road Classifieds '02 MV Senna '03 Tiger 955i '96 Tiger '79 Fantic Hiro 250
