And when the helicopter slams into the building. Sub-woofers rock.

Well, that's partly down to the system, partly down to the size if the
screen and massively down to the quality of the audio mix. Many surround
    mixes simply aren't that great.

The mix on Black Hawk Down is simply superb - most seem to be little
more than engineers using the extra speakers just because they can (not
unlike the obsession with flicking sounds across stereo when records
    first became multi-channel).

Quote from the OP: "run a LH, RH and centre speaker".

That'll be the three of us that are anal like this, then - and I'm
expecting Bear to want to sit in the middle seat, too.
There's a time for this, depending on the programming. We generally
watch the telly with the amp off, relying on the TV's speakers - as
you do. There's a channel, RushHD, that supplies particularly good
sound that the TV uses to generate a very convincing 'virtual
surround' that is comfortably absorbing in an initially surprising way
    - quite grin-worthy.

When we're deliberately sitting down to watch something (usually
recorded, these days) then we will usually flick the amp on - as much
to get the benefit of the separation of dialogue from the music, as
anything - but there's some TV progs that are broadcast in decent
surround: Casualty springs to mind for the use of 'noises off' that
really brings the prog to life.

A movie on Blu-Ray is satisfyingly completely immersive with the sound
wicked up. Using one of the uncompressed formats really brings it to
life, and with a superb picture on the big screen it is equal to or
better than the cinema (access to the pause button, no cunts rustling
or seat-kicking, no fucked speakers, a short stroll for a wee or a
whisky mid-fillum, that sort of thing) and that's why I've spent a
considerable wedge on TV, amp and speakers: satisfaction.

We got really into it on Saturday night: the new Indiana Jones,
followed by Speed Racer both on BD accompanied with Irish coffees and
    chocolate. Life is good ;-)

A 2.1 amp - only somebody like Logitech, for connection to a PC, I'd
    think.
    That's what I was assuming.
Well, exactly. We can get right into it, then ;-)

Well the lounge is 23' x 17' and the TV is one end, I am usually the other
end, I have a set of five Mission speakers of which the rear two are
sat in the garage as i dont want them, I forget what model exactly of
speaker, but thay ran my Yamaha DSP590 well enough for my ears.

If i have to have a surround sound jobbie I will but I want it to be black
    and not to tall.

I woudl have thought someone would have said get "whatever" and this
will do the job, never thought it would be so hard to sort an Amp out.

Oh well, the speakers just look cool sat there doing nothing at the moment.

There are more guns being used than you get to see on the screen. When
the camera pans across, the guns going out of shot don't suddenly stop
    firing.[1]

[1] Well the actors might have, but IRL they wouldn't have.

Keep counting. I'm a tad fussy when it comes to movie sound too.
A good surround sound track and a big screen turns normal TV
viewing into an event. I even have friends asking to come round
and watch particular movies. Sat down with an ample supply of G&T
and beer, it beats the cinema hands down.

No-one forces you to buy popcorn, sweets & fizzy drinks.

And surely it's not too much to ask that people can sit and watch a
film without the need to eat and drink constantly. It's only for a
    couple of hours, FFS.
No-one forces you to go and watch blockbusters that need the help from
the alcohol to make them palatable.

I do not have an upper budget, never set one either, I dont mind
paying for the right Amp, it's just I have no idea which one.

Which Cambridge Amp would you suggest as I have no idea, but I remind
you (and others) it has to have an optical input so I can get the sound from
    the
    TV through it.

Yebbut, while I've not been to a cinema with less seats than your
lounge, I've been to ones with smaller screens :)

I'd report you too. Blatant non-carnivorous behaviour.

My dad used to tell me tales of Maltese blokes who'd sat in the front
row walking out of the cinema after watching a western and brushing the
    desert sand off their clothes.
