    Who nevertheless remain loyal and loving. It's their making of that
    choice that makes us appreciate them.

    Like Jay who, usually at least once but sometimes as many as four
    times in one night, brings home some sort of assorted rodent, then
    proceeds to crunch it in the hall outside our bedroom door. I mean,
    the crunching's bad enough, the bits left on the rug are worse. But
    somehow, the fact that he chooses to bring it home first makes it
    so... oh I dunno, but he wants to be around us even while making the
    point that he doesn't actually need us.
