Has anyone used one of the voice to text programs? I think there is only
IBM Via Voice or Dragon Dictate that are the main players. What were your
experiences? I've got to cut down my typing so this seems the obvious
    answer.

    Cheers

I use L & H Voice Express quite a bit. TBO it's a real faff to set up, but
once done it works pretty well and has saved me a great deal of time as I'm
as yet unable to read, think and then type at the same time. I can type
pretty quickly - but this translates voice to type far quicker. It throws
out the odd hysterical lines occasionally so you do have to watch what it's
    up to.

On balance it was worth the 40 squids or so, but it does *take time* to set
up the voice recognition and get used to the commands.

    via voice = useless

Took forever ( read hours) to get through the *ten min* training
program. Once trained it was completely unusable.

I use Via Voice from time to time. As another poster said it takes a lot of
"training", I have been using it for over a year, and it gradually improves
with use. It has been pretty reliable for the last 6 months or so.

Forgot to say, the headset that comes with Via Voice is crap. Get a decent
headset and mike and the program works much better.

Tried via-voice on Linux with mixed results initially, then someone
recommended junking the shyte microphone and retraining it.

Results improved enourmously, unlike my spellink, when I used an Shure mic
instead of the nasty POS Creative mic that came bundled with the soundcard.

Still faster for me to type :)

I got reasonably accurate results from it, but found it utterly arsed my
train of thought having to meter my speech rate and talking in a monotonal,
    clipped way.

Well, thanks for all that feedback. From what I can find out, Dragon is the
better of the products - just bloody expensive!

I can't seem to find this on mine. Maybe it is a plugin that your firm is
    using.

I had completely the opposite result.

On the fastest PC at home, defragged, plenty of memory, swap space.

Using a good sound card and a good mike it appeared that problems
initially weredue to background sounds - anything in the background
including the noisy pc fan/creaky chair confused the s/w.

I did the 1 hr training bit as well and the first time I used it
dictated a 300 word e-mail with one small problem.

I have set up other people in the past: I have to say it seemed that
they were not consistent in their speech patterns.

    Hey Ho.

I used the microsoft speech sdk (which comes with some basic tools for
recognition and output) and it seemed quite good. The upside was that it
    was free.

Doubt it - the trainer (we've just moved to XP) didn't even know it
was there in all Office products. Maybe they're just later versions -
all seem to be 2002 copyright, so I guess it's about the latest of it
    all.

  14. Friend of mine who is severely disabled uses dragon dictate to write and
control his PC. Seems to work alright but he does tend to have to reinstall
every few months and apparently it's a bind teaching it swear words.

Kalico was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
RSI problems? If so, I can recommend the Kinesis Ergo Elan
keyboard. Helped me a lot, so much that I've got one for home use as
    well.

Last time I looked at them they weren't much cop. You can type faster,
and the only way to get a decent (90%+) success rate was to talk in a
sort of sing-song piss-take american accent. Then it was nearly
useable, but I went back to keyboard anyway.

If you do any sort of technical writing then you end up typing the
    specialist lingo in anyway.

In any of the office products it's in the tools menu (if you're
editing a document). Once you've turned 'Speech' on, it stays that way
for all the other bits of office too, and defaults to that ion startup
every fucking time. So I later found out that it's _also_ controlled
by the 'Language Bar, Microphone' setting.
