OT : Arse. It's slippy on the A5 through MK

Does the Highways agency have a legal responsibility to grit the major roads
it says it is responsible for?

The A5 though MK at the moment is just sheet ice all the way along its length
    (bar the newly tarmac'd stretch).

No sign of grit on it this morning, none this evening.

Coming home tonight, passed 4 cars on my side and two cars on the other side
parked at interesting angles. At 40 I could feel the car just constantly
slithering all over the place so backed off to 30.

Came round a slight bend to see a car span out and sitting the wrong way in
the slow lane about 150 yards in front of me, two other cars between me and
it braking and trying to avoid it, I dipped the clutch and feathered the
brakes as much as I dared but the arse end still swung out a few times and
then gently swung round 140 degrees and my NSF kissed the central barrier.

Of course by the time I'd got it facing the right way and moving again the
other spinee had fucked off so I couldn't stab them with bits of headlight.

Crinkle cut LH front wing, corner of bonnet and fucked indicator and
    headlight.

Oh well, it's only an old M3. New light bits ordered from EBay and make busy
with the lump hammer this weekend.

Now can I claim compensation from the Highways Agency for failing to grit the
    roads they're responsible for?

I'm guessing they are putting far less grit down in the belief that it is
cheaper to pay out for compensation claims rather than buy 500,000 tonnes of
    grit.

took a blunt brush and painted...
    Thanks for finding that Peter.

    Not really a suprise.

Still, it might releive the boredom tomorrow to write an "Angry from Milton
Keynes" letter demanding to know why the A5 is frequently forgotten about
    when they're (not) gritting.

I could wrap the letter round the remains of the headlamp and throw it
through their window. If I could get there.

Next year I'll buy a SO4x4Shed in November.

Commiserations, time to buy shares in crash repair companies as you're
    not alone.
I'd be tempted to try those car snow socks.

Might have missed the band wagon though, most places appear to be sold out.

That's what you did wrong. 30 is only a reasonable speed when conditions
allow it, you should've crawled along at 10.

  6. No, and they will have their brief point out that you were clearly
driving too fast for the conditions.

Of course you can. I'd be surprised if your claim succeeded, mind.

    Informative. Factual. Concise. Appreciated even.

And as helpful as being told fire is hot right after the match burns down to
    your fingers.

Another experience to file under "life" I think.

Ah, but said conditions only existed because they failed to grit the road!

What suprised me was the fact that the local council are not responsible for
major A and M roads, they do everything else but leave the A5 and M1.

So if one lot actually does their job and the other lot don't, I can see
drivers get used to gritted main roads, get onto the A5 and find there's ****
    all grip.

Or they drive round MK at 5mph when they can do 50 IYSWIM.

    A tank.

    That's what I need.

Yup. Just use big ones and join them together to get the length.

So the snow was all the fault of the council? Sorry dude, won't wash.

They were still the prevailing conditions though, and you misjudged
    them.

FWIW I nearly did a similar thing a couple of evenings ago, but
decided that when the car completely changed lanes on it's own as I
traveled over packed ice that the remainder of the journey just
wasn't worth it, so I limped home at about 15-20 mph.

They don't work on a fucking bike let alone a car. Don't just repeat
    something you've heard - it'll be wrong.

Actually whether you heard it or not, it'll just be wrong.

    Don't know, don't care.

I just wish people would stop fucking moaning that its is down to someone
else to sort out all their problems for them.

If you take your car/bike out in the ice, then its your choice.

Other countries are pissing them selves laughing at us.

No, said conditions existed because of a thing we all know about, its
    called "weather".
