I'm sure if you accepted a hefty council tax increase they would be glad
    to oblige.

I was chatting to a builder yesterday and apparently(1) a local
newspaper in Aylesbury is quoting the Police telling members of the
public to approach the local council for damages due to the fact that
    gritting wasn't done.

(1)I can't find reference to it online.

Its a builder, quoting a story from a local rag about legal advice from
    plod. That you can't find.

Which bit does all this break down at in your opinion ?

The most likely scenario is plod wanted to say "**** off you moaning
chav", but decided to push it the councils way instead.

I didn't realise that grit has gone up in price that much over the past 20
    years.

If, as I suspect, it hasn't, just how did they manage to grit everywhere,
including the minor roads, 20 years ago? [1]

[1] Reading this line back I imagined a blue wavy line under it moaning about
too many commas. I've used PCs far too much.

Maybe they didn't in your part of the world 20 years ago but where I lived
    they fucking well did.

I clearly remember in Carlisle (when I had just started driving so 23 years
ago), the gritters being out every single night, from 6pm to midnight.

    Main roads and minor roads.

I see from reports round Cumbria they're now as tight arsed as everywhere
else and don't bother with minor roads at all and only do main roads as
    little as possible.

I know my wife (Swedish) is. She's constantly telling dickheads who've got
stuck in the snow how to get out. Obviously, the don't believe her, coz
she's a mere woman, but when she drives around them and bimbles on her way,
they probably adopt her methods when she's out of sight. Meanwhile, she's
laughing her **** off (no cock and she's not laughing mine off, unlike
    Nige's wife:)

She's told 4 blokes while I've been sat in the passenger seat and all of
them gave "that" look. They didn't when she drove off though in her 2 wheel
    drive Fuckem though.

I wouldn't mind, but she'd never driven in Sweden in the winter until a year
or so back, so it's **** all to do with experience of snowy conditions, it's
a simple matter of not nailing the throttle to get moving and not moving too
quickly once you *have* got moving.

Start slowly, stay slowly, get where you're going and park up.

Plus think ahead to allow maintaining forward progress at all times
    wherever possible.

It makes an interesting comparison with trials car driving on mud/grass,
where revving the tits off the motor and spinning the wheels like ****
seems to be order of the day. Then they are light RWD cars, running mega
low tyre pressures, with a passenger who can bounce up and down to
    assist.

    Oh, SITE!
Ironically I got the M3 to play around on track days as I've got used to FWD
and forgotten how to drive a RWD car properly (in anger that is).

I haven't found a car park that hasn't been festooned with lamposts or bins
or curbs yet, I think the planners do it on purpose.

They didn't, is the simple answer.

I have been around long enough to have seen a few of these rare heavy
snowfall events and it is just the same now as ever it was. The
difference, if there is any, is the reliance that we have placed on the
motor car over the last 20 years and the distances we expect to travel[/QUOTE]

    Aye.

"Car is stuck... I can't get out, not sure about walking, because that is
    dangerous"
You would think they would be more interested in the Icelandics welshing
on the 3Bn they owe us, personally I think we should go and do some land
grabbing and develop a new playground.

Oh, that would be a section of the country that is more likely to get
snow/ice every year, for a longer period.

And have less miles of road to cover.

And less cars 20 years ago, so less stupid dicks driving like tossers in
    the ice :)
That could be because the small amount we all pay on council tax has to go
further, you do know it pays people wages don't you ? And equipment, and
    rent (think Fire services).

People demand more, but expect to pay less.

If you want more, campaign to pay more.

Strangely enough, you will get very few who realise it is req'd.

Hmm, I don't know about this one. Cumbria has more hills and more villages
that would be cut off, so on balance I'd say they would have more miles to
    cover, or the same.
Ah, but more cars means the salt gets distributed better and the ice gets
    pounded into slush quicker!
    Well duh.
    I don't demand more, I don't demand anything.

Serious question, how many miles of major roads were there in 1990. And how
many now? (ignore roads "reclassified", just count them as they were in 1990
    otherwise the numbers get skewed)

And what was the rates home owners had to pay in 1990? (say a 3 bed semi)
I'm just a tight arse and can't afford to claim a fly splat on my insurance
at the moment, so if I can get anyone else to pay, I've had a good day! :)

Anyway, the cost of repairs is totting upto a massive £150 all in.
(or it will when I find a wing and bonnet in the right colour)

    Fewer roads, less miles.

And FWIW, I lived in Penrith during 84/85, and they only gritted the main
roads. The ploughed some of the smaller ones, but that was it. I think
your memory has been tainted by the move down south.
No, more vehicles blocking roads making it harder to get by.
I think your rant was, TBH.
    I'll give you a hint.

**** off and google it !
And that anyone else would be other people who pay taxes, that will then
have to go up to cover the cost of attempted payouts by cunts like you !
Do your self a favour, buy a different car :)

Cumbria is a lot bigger area than Buckinghamshire (Cumbria 2612.4 sq miles,
    Bucks 726 sq miles).
I lived in Criffle road, off Moorhouse road. Our road certainly wasn't a
major road but it was gritted. Strangely enough more often than not they
didn't bother to grit Green Lane which never made sense to me.

It seemed like their plan was to grit the main roads and all minor roads off
    it.
Proving that the gritting levels down south are shit :)
Ah but you said "driving" which implies moving, not sitting there :p
Rant? What rant? I asked if I could claim off anyone/body/thing and described
    what happened.
    10% from 1980 to 2005.

So regardless of how much the population has gone up, or how many more cars
there are, they only need 10% more grit to reach the same levels of coverage.
God you're no bloody good. Applicants for a man servant to
    please!

    <googles>

"In 1974 the top-rate of income tax increased to its highest rate since the
    war, 83%" - ****. me. I'm glad I was a carefree 9 year old back then.

I can't dig out anything that'd give me an idea of ratable value for a 3 bed
    semi circa 1980. Guesstimate £200pa.

    http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/currency/results1.asp#mid

says that's worth £570 in todays money. Council tax on similar band D
    property? Say £700.

So we're paying 23% more, 10% more roads and less gritting.
We're too late anyway, there's loads of organisations and companies out there
that put maximum profits a long way before people. (in the Ford Pinto petrol
    tank kind of way)
Hmm, I suppose a Mk2 Escort would be even cheaper to repair, but I can live
with £150 if it's all the same to you!
