Indeed. I've seen many a rally car come to grief on a patch of ice after going very well over a very snowy section. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+

frag posted: From some random searching, it seems that Cumbria County Council looks after about 4700 miles of road. This won't include the M6 (~60 miles), or the Cumbrian stretch (~20 miles) of the A69 which is privately contracted. Buckinghamshire County Council looks after about 2000 miles of road, I have no figures for the non-council maintained roads. Cumbria's population is just under 500,000 - Buckinghamshire's is about 730,000 (and almost certainly considerably more affluent on average).
So why make the ill-informed statement in the first instance? blah, ukrm, blah, blah, ill-informed, blah, blah, no fucking excuse.
Last week, somebody linked to a farmers' forum where they recalled being given grit for the taking by the councils, some 20ish years back, and more recently. As a result many local roads were kept clear (out of self-interest) by the farmers to everyone's benefit.
Heh, that's interesting. What's the tyre dimension of your Jag? Possibly designed before the "fat tyre" fashion took over . . . .
255 tyres usually come with plenty of HP, which not necessarily makes it easier to administer _just_ the effect necessary to get the vehicle rolling, slowly. No doubt that skills on two wheels makes you more likely to cope with snow and ice, even in a powerful car. Most often the problem, on snow and ice, is to grind to a halt in time before you hit the vehicle in front. Even if I have no problem with exceeding the local speed limits on today's roads, I plan my braking _very_ well in advance. Preferably with the use of the packed snow/ rough ice _besides_ the track used by most drivers - but such habits are probably default choices of everyone here.
YTC#1 posted: No need to google. From the above (admittedly flawed) figures, Cumbria has about 106 people per mile of road, Bucks 365. Of course that doesn't take into account those who are going in/out from/to other counties. However, AFAIK councils do not use mere population figures to determine gritting priorities.
took a blunt brush and painted... Almost exactly what happened to me. I'm having big problems trying to get any fuckers on EBay to get off their arses and post me the bits I need. I'm just going to have to drive the BM without the FLHS indicator & headlamp until they come. Might rig up something as an indicator and duck tape it in place for now. Amen brother.
