I've just shown this to Laura. She found it quite amusing.

  2. I didn't bother to reply to you Bruce because I really did not want to
end up in an interminable argument with you. You don't give in until
you've clobbered your "opponent" into the ground. IMO Champ is
typically rather more forgiving than you in this approach to arguing
    over something.

Let's just accept that on this issue (and many others) we'll never
agree. We can then save ourselves the effort in future.

I'm actually upset that he thinks of me like that.

I always respect other people's opinions, even when they're wrong.

Some claim British Asparagus tastes best. At any other time an asparagus
devotee residing in the UK might get their asparagus from whence they
can. Champ specifically mentioned June. That is the grass (a corruption
I know but a fairly well known one) season in the UK. So why buy what
they consider inferior produce flown in from miles away, then - except
on price grounds. If you don't rate asparagus at all, then it probably
    makes no odds.

As I said. A blind tasting would be fun.

  10. Sorry, accidental use of family shorthand for asparagus.

  11. As a serious asparagus fan, I think that English is actually the best, and
that some of the pleasure is waiting for that lovely short period when it is
in season. Bit like Jersey Royals, I guess. Which is perhaps the point: I
would buy that which I consider best, rather than munching something less
good for the sake of it. Sometimes that's foreign, sometimes it ain't.

  12. Microwaves or bowls? <grin> As I said, that's not why I cook them that way,
I think they turn out nicer.

Ummm - Jersey Royals. Now you see SWMBO doesn't rate spuds at all. Can't
even see why the fuss about Jerseys. To her a spud is a spud.

One of the few things that grows well in my garden is potatoes, even
though the wireworm are a problem. I usually try to grow at least four
varieties. Always Charlotte. Also salad red type like Roseval, Desiree
or Cherie. (I detect a 'theme'). Ratte are v. good as well.

No, but I have a thing about 'wild' (or alpine) strawberries with blue
cheese. Got a small group of those and also a patch of an ancient
strawberry variety that produces not a big crop of often misshapen and
smallish fruit. Very dark red and intensely flavoured though. Not the
huge perfectly symmetrical cone shaped tasteless supermarket things.

But that may have something to do with the fact that most of the
continent seems to have white and not green Asparagus...

Don't get me wrong, I like both and I *do* prefer to buy British
    Asparagus while it's in season.

Yes indeed. Particularly with red onions and balsamic vinegar.

Could also be because it adds a day or so to the supply chain if it's
shipped in from outside of the UK so it's not so fresh.

I've had some really nice asparagus in Germany. Had better in the UK
though, much better but I suspect that was the overall dining experience
rather than the quality of the asparagus.

Oh, I'd agree to that as well.
Fair enough. My aunt lives near Heidelberg and that area is one of the
main producers of asparagus in Germany. We've had a few nice dinners
there were we went to the fields and the farmers were selling asparagus
that had been dug up a few hours ago at most.
