  1. *Sigh*.

Yes Champ. Whatever. Of course you are right.

    Happy now?

(I could of course point out that darsy once commented that I was an
unusual Christian in that I seemed to have a sense of humour but I
won't because that would be churlish)..

  3. Sad git, me, but you knew that. I make tea in a pot, even for just me. On
the coffee front, I prefer ground: I've a neat widget from Whittards. A sort
of nylon basket which is an individual filter. You stick ground coffee in
same, put it in mug/cup, add hot water. Stir it a bit after it has brewed,
remove, et voila! A quite decent cup of real stuff for one. I do instant as
well, if I am really rushed and caffeine deprived.

Those Whittards things are brilliant. I bought one a couple of months
back - I could never be arsed wth fresh coffee until I got it. Use it
all the time now, so it's a good job I have an almost limitless supply
    of ground coffee these days.

When I first worked at my late lamented employer, we had fresh coffee
on the go pretty much continuously. Them were t'days.

I try and avoid instant. I have a cafetiere on my desk. My team reckon
that the ratio between the level of the coffee and it's temperature give
them a better indication of system stability than the monitors ;)

  7. Highly civilised, indeed. The first year I worked at the Post Office, just
before we became BT, we had a proper tea trolley with tea lady. And she sold
    cakes.

  8. Heh. Is this like Homer and the doughnuts? A bloke I worked with at Bull had
a proper espresso machine on his desk. If you begged nicely, he'd make you a
    cup as a great favour.

You may be right, but that was still the practice when I worked at RR
    in the early 1980s.

  10. Piss off, she said cheerfully. If you want, I can bore you with the dates,
but I don't think that was your point.

Nope, that's one of the infrastructure guys :)
*no one* touches my caffeine ;)

Actually, I have at home, a can of Japanese 'Boss' brand coffee that was
bought by one of my then team while on holiday. Still makes me smile :)

I *believe* it's still the practice in a large, educational
establishment in Harlow and at least one tech company that was in a
    documentary a while back.

It was the General Post Office you worked for, so you'll be that all

  14. Nope. Himself worked for the GPO, I worked for the PO. It had been split in
to Telecoms and Post by then.

There was a "Blown a seal" line there somewhere, but I couldn't work

At work I just put 20p in the machine and get a cup of coffee without
any hassle at all. We have all the shit for making tea or coffee in
the mess room but time is at a premium if I want to have a smoke as
well as a brew because smoking's banned in the mess room.

We had a tea bitch in the offices when I was an apprentice who had a
hissy fit if she saw anyone drinking out of a mug when cups and
    saucers were available.

My last boss insisted that we drank from cups, not mugs, in sales
