    In
... and while the meat etc is stewing is it honestly beyond people to knock a
    few Yorkshire Puds up?

  2. It was one of the so-called novelty dishes you could make with MWs, not
that I ever tried. Anyway, the meringue is supposed to be hot: difficult
to achieve if you're slapping ice cream round some ready-made meringue.

  4. Good one in Wallington, near us. The Doctor is taking a pitch next year,
with stuff from her allotment and The Beez.

    Oh, and horseradish, of course.[/QUOTE]

Do say when she's doing this. The honey was lovely and I'd be interested
to see how good the stuff is from the allotment. I might even spend
    some money!

  5. Seconded - I'd be interested.

  6. I am contemplating a trip down there tomorrow plus a visit to one or two
places I have on a list of "good shops" to try. Borough Market isn't
cheap but if the quality and taste are right then I don't mind.

I spent the least I have ever spent in Waitrose this evening. The
shopping "experience" was even worse than usual. It's all a bit
revealing when you really stop to look at prices, ingredients, and where
stuff has come from. Spring Onions from bloody Mexico!

Even worse one of the managers said "good afternoon" in a rather
pleasant tone as I left. I felt like saying "it's the last time I'll
ever shop here" and then giving him a lecture on ethics but I just
    wanted to get home.

And what is telling in your reply that your main assessment criteria is
price rather than taste or quality. Like (most of) the rest of us
you've been lulled into thinking that price is the only basis to
evaluate the food on offer in differing outlets.

  10. Gah. And why do we need out of season stuff so much, eh?
To be fair to Waitrose, they are probably one of the supermarkets that might
well have *listened*. And been able to discuss the issues intelligently.

    4 minutes?
I don't buy frozen, these are the "fresh" ones.

If we didn't have out of season stuff, March and April would be pretty bleak,
    food-wise.

The food miles concept when used as a measure of sustainable farming is an
oversimplification in any case - it takes no account of the energy used to
grow the food abroad compared to closer to home.

Dunno if it's technically a farmer's market, but the produce was utterly
    lovely :)
Sainsbury's it's not, but best Pork Pies I've ever had.

Why not? This faux-modern ideal of eating things only when they're "in
season" is just so much bullshit only allowed for by the fact that
we're surrounded by all year round availability. If you _really_ only
ate what was in season locally you'd be on a pretty fucking barren
    diet.

  16. When I was writing about the business, Waitrose was the best chain after
M&S. And had the best specs, after M&S. And the best work ethic and the
    best staff.

  17. And besides, this country has not been able to feed itself for 200-odd
years. We *have* to import food. Oddly, the fact that we've relied on
imported food for so long tends to get overlooked by the prats who bleat
    about "food miles".

Heh. I'll pass on the word (and to Ali). We've still got six whole
honeycomb frames in the freezer[1], if you fancy a chunk.

[1] Why? Honey doesn't freeze, and it does not crystallise (you know -
turn hard and sugary) as long as it's in the comb. So what we do is wrap
the whole combs in cling film and store them in the freezer. They get
cold enough for the leaked honey (there's always some) not to run, and
then when we want to jar some we can just pull out a comb.

You don't need to understand _why_, but don't you ever actually use
    the microwave yourself?

Not for cooking, as such, no.

    <Thinks>

Use it for rice, some veg, for defrosting, fheating up, or kick-starting
some jacket spuds and the like, and that's about it.

Son has the occasional ready meal (invariably curry) done in it.
