Volvo estate boot space = 2120 litres

Maverick boot space = 2230 litres

In other words it's not pitiful, it's HUGE and very useable, in the
same way as the Volvo is - maybe I'm not so ignorant after all.

The Maverick has a much higher roof line making the loading of drum
kits and suchlike much easier. OK, so the Volvo is longer by 2 inches
and wider by similar, but getting bulky stuff in and out of a low
roofed long vehicle when you're 6ft - as Cat is - is a pain. Also,
living in W. London - as Cat does - I'd rather have a shorter but much
taller vehicle when it comes to finding a parking space.

I was suggesting a Maverick or Terrano 2 on the basis of knowing Cat,
and knowing what she would be using the car for.

Funny how you didn't slate the Pug 405 estate devotees, or the Citroen
BXs, but chose to slate the only vehicle with a bigger boot capacity
    than the Volvo.

It sounds uncomfortably like she is planning to go work as a van
    courier!

Have a look at a recent thread started by Cat where she wants someone
to check out a drum kit for her.

Not funny at all - she asked for advice on an estate car, which the
Maverick really isn't, and in most people's view a 'huge boot' would
be measured by flat load area, not total volume.

    So in those terms the other suggestions fitted the specification[1];
    your's didn't.

[1] Although one might dispute the 'bulletproof', but I don't know
    about that.

The income is likely to be lower, certainly.
I'm toying with the idea of bike couriering atm, I royally pissed
someone off this afternoon, he came and had a shout. Something about
right of way or something. Oops.

A huge boot to me is bigger than a Pug 405s or a BXs. To me it's cubic
capacity, not flat load area and I like height to get bulky objects in
as well. The kind of large stuff I carry would be awkward to get in a
Volvo without taking them apart to a great extent and laying them on
their side, whereas with my motor I just whip the front wheel and
    mudguard off.
170,000 miles and still on the original clutch, drinks no oil between
services and starts on the button. No rust scabs anywhere, everything
works as it should, no rattly or worn out trim and drives like a car
with less than half the miles. Its a typical Nissan in disguise, the
only things that Ford made were the badges. All for 350 quid with a
full MOT and 6 months tax, try finding a decent 1997 Volvo Estate in
the same conditon for the same money.

If you say so. I'm not actually very familiar with them, so I didn't
    comment.

    <snip justification>

Clearly you find your car ideal for what you want it for, and I'm in
    no way knocking that, OK?
    <snip justification>

I was referring to the other vehicles mentioned, not yours.

Bit paranoid today, aren't we, old chap?

My Maverick's V5 document lists the body type as 'Estate' too. Maybe
Ace doesn't like them cos there's nowhere to mount gold taps.

Well quite. And if someone wants an SUV, then fine, but if they want
an estate then they should stick to proper estates.

Unless we're going to accept Swansea's definitions, in which case we
should formally adopt the term 'motor bicycle'. How do I go about
getting the newsgroup name changed to ukrmb?

i think there just isn't enough space in the box for "i want people to think
i'm chuck norris but in fact i'm just a bit scared i might not come off too
    well in a crash".

I ticked the box which said "This cost as much as my 2 years older
    Micra sold for"
