Yes... those RX7s (1) are nigh on bullet proof.

    (1) Yes I know, I know... you did use the word 'some' above. ;-)

But surely that describes the petrol version as well? The only
sensible thing to do with any Omega estate would be to burn it in a
    disused quarry.

Hmm, perhaps I should have traded the Octavia in for a 4x4 version or
    even the 'Scout'.

Definitely might be worth picking up that set of snow wheels/tyres by
the look of it (though I have a set of chains).

Oooh, ooh, I have a set of 195/65R15 wheels/tyres off my Volvo[1] that
use the same 5-stud spacing as VAG ones. Any good to you?

[1] I kept them thinking they might fit the R36, but that won't take
anything smaller than a 17" wheel, as the front brake calipers are too
    big.

Could be, but we will be closer to Calais than we will be to you. A bit
bulky for UR transport, but thanks anyway.

So, I'm skirting round the Volvo 850 conceptually as I think that's a
car I could love enough. Insurance quotes withstanding.

There are a few dealer examples (presumably px ones being booted out)
They're high mileage and around the £700, assuming I can haggle a bit
and wave cash around that seems reasonable if they have a full year T&T,
correct me if I'm flat out wrong.

Would I be right in thinking that any trader has a legal duty to sell a
vehicle that is in good service and if it turns out to be a complete
shed within 3 months I have *half* a chance of making them take it back?

A private sale might be £100 cheaper, but am I shouldering a bunch more
risk that way, or am I equally stuck in either case?

I've got no car insurance at all, so I can't drive a private sale car
before taking it away. Can you test drive on a dealer's insurance, or is
that always covered by your *own* policy? I've had keys thrown at me
before, but never thought twice because I knew I had insurance on any
    car I drove.

You won't get much comeback on a £700 car. Your main comeback is if the
trader misrepresents the vehicle. Taking a friend along to listen to any
claims about the vehicle is always a good idea.
    http://www.adviceguide.org.uk/index/c_secondhand_cars.pdf is from the CAB.
Nothing universal. In the current times I expect one of the economies small
traders will make is on insurance. Ask and make sure you know the policy
excess before you drive away. It will probably be higher than the value of
    the car.

http://www.dayinsure.com/ should be able to sort you out

Check with the dealer but I'm pretty sure that if they have trade
insurance it should cover customers for test drives.

You can't generalise like that. Most traders in cheapo cars will have
cheapo trade insurance that covers named drivers only. Policies that allow
customers to use vehicles are incredibly expensive, hence the increasing
practice of charging people £15-25 for the use of a courtesy car.
