I can't sleep if I drink - alright I go into coma but three hours later
I'm up and about and that's the end of any sleep.

The only one I've found is ok is splenda. Aspartame is the devil's
    sweetener.

However, if you are giving up coffee, you may be better not giving up
all the sugar at the same time. I've never had withdrawal quite as bad
as it sounds yours is but you sound almost as if there's a little
shock mixed in. Sugar would help with that, and you can cut that back
    in slower time.

  5. I am with Howard on this one and would suggest exercise rather than
giving up your recreational drugs. Throw in a bit of rock and roll as
well and you are enjoying life too. Learning how to deal with stress
might help as well but as you are a bird that might be more difficult.
but either way there is no point in punishing yourself just because you
    can't sleep.

  9. Recent studies suggest that coffee (as a whole, I think, not just
caffeine) helps reverse alcohol damage to the liver.

  10. Try xylitol - it works for me (made from birch bark or corn husks and
actually tastes pretty close to sugar).

The one thing you can't do with it is make hard-boiled sweets as it
doesn't boil.. But if I do have an espresso I sweeten it with xylitol
and I'm hard-pushed to tell the difference between the taste of a
sugar-sweetened one (which I can't have any more anyway!).

Oh - and don't give it to dogs. In humans it doesn't get processed by
the insulin pathways *at all* but in dogs it provokes a very large
    insulin reaction.

  11. Yup. It's foul.

I'm drinking some Licorice 'Egyptian Spice' tea at the moment. It
tastes a lot nicer than it sounds and for some bizarre reason seems to
be reducing the frequency of my migraines. It could be coincidence of
course but I'll test that by stopping drinking it and see if the
    headaches come back.

  12. In normal doses - absolutely nothing.
IANAMP (I am not a medical person) but caffeine in high doses (and I
mean high - you need to drink *large* quantities of strong coffee to
get these. But it's easily possible and I've known people have these
side effects in the programming world..)

Cardiac problems - caffeine is a CNS (central nervous system) stimulant
and too much can cause arrhythmia (irregular heartbeats).

Increases blood pressure - which is not usually a good thing.

Causes insommnia - again not a good thing.

  14. Do you get the cough when you dring things like coca-cola or other
fizzy drinks with caffeine in? Or when drinking tea?
Caffeine is a CNS stimulant and does have quite an effect on the heart.
It doesn't seem to give me much of a pick-me-up effect but it *does*
give me insomnia (which is why I have a coffee I have it at least 5
hours before I want to go to bed..)

  15. What a.. pleasant way of describing it. Unfortunately I know exactly
    what you mean.
When I went to see the (utterly useless) pain clinic in Surrey 4 years
ago the bloke refused to prescribe me codeine-only tablets because they
were 'too easily abused'. I still have the (mostly unused) stock of
paracetamol & codeine (500mg/30mg) that he gave me despite me telling
him that I don't touch paracetamol (it makes my joints *really* stiff
and sore after it wears off).

Which only confirms my opinion of him as an utter tool of the first
water who shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a patient (or hospital) of
    any description.

  16. Sounds great - except that when I'm on a heavy painkiller dose it's
because of migraines and red wine is the last thing I need :-(

Mind you I'm perfectly happy to drink a bottle of red wine at the drop
of a hat any other time..
I take my high-dosage ibuprofen/codeine tablets with milk - according
to the quack it should make no difference at all to the chance of it
causing stomach-bleed but it seems to prevent it utterly in me.

We're both weird. Viva la difference!
Which is what I do. I have other migraine (non-codeine based)
medication which is not as effective but which I can use for a month or
two to let things calm down again.

Can also have a laxative effect (in humans, no idea about dogs)

If by "brew it deliberately" you mean leave the bag/leaves in for more
