    This is true.

I didn't realise how bad X-Factor was until last weekend when my mum
was staying and I let her watch both Strictly & X-Factor.

I tried to hide behind the newspaper, but the sound of wailing made me
have to look up occasionally. It really is a pile of wank. Neither
the judges nor the audience seem to have a clue about what's good and
    what isn't.

Cheryl Cole said of Crocodile Rock that "I am not familar with that
    song". I mean, FFS!

You've just captured exactly what makes it magnificent.

As a televised contest to find a new recording artist, it's abysmal. As
a bit of popular trash culture, it's peerless.

Wagner's still in it. That tells you all you need to know about how
seriously the audience are taking it.

Depends on the job - I wouldn't do it like that.
When you've finished teaching me to suck eggs I'll go check if my kids
    have bred.
In my sector it is all application forms, CVs aren't really used, this
was feedback from a speculative toe in the private sector. It led me
to conclude this recrutiment firm was rubbish and no I didn't want to
sign up with them or for them to put me forward for anything. Place
bets now as to if they'll ignore this.
    As above.

That's because you're a proper academic who has been doing hard
science stuff for years not an accidental one doing policy wank for
funders who don't like the conclusions from what you've actually done
    but something else please.
It's just the ones where we are waiting for the publication - I've got
a couple of forthcomings on there.

Can I insert my usual rant about embargoed research here please?
Though as of yesterday I can say that it is the TDA that have
embargoed one of the 3 reports that are stuck in quango and government
death throes. I've got permission to rewrite the report for a BERJ
submission but now I finally have it I'll have to dredge up enthusiasm
as well as fitting it in around the current research.

  5. My last interview - a competitive technical assessment - involved an
hour of questions on schematics and fault finding and then 45 minutes
discussing the mischief people used to get up to at my depot. Mortars,
blowpipes, coffee jars of black powder and the like.

The second part of my second interview was with the then HR manager, who
gave me a form with a load of questions on it and told me what the best
thing was to write in each box.

Third part of the second interview was a coffee at the local Starbucks,
which I guess was the "can I spend 8 hours a day with this ****"
    assessment. Yes, apparently.

Could you just publish it on the Interwebs anyway, as yourself?

I don't think UKRM count as peer review.

Yes, but with any report copyright issues are negotiated with the
funders. The huge UK/US one is stuck in this process - despite big
name academic joint PI presenting at a conference in Sydney recently
on the work and naming *all* the organisations involved.

(I've hinted here at some but that's not in front of all the top
academics in the field, including representatives from the funders.

Cue shit storm with funders (rightly so, he was completely out of
order) and new round of release negotiations - which I think is what
he was aiming for - he took a risk, but he's big name enough for it
not to matter if he never gets work from them again - trouble is rest
of the team then get linked with his antics - my colleague is
seriously considering asking for her name to be removed from the final
report as she wants to stay in academia - I'm not bothered, I'm just
pissed off that my 2 single author case studies (which aren't big name
    ones) aren't available.
    Yes. But see above.
Unusually for you, no you're not.

Ahh, I also seem to have misinterpreted your rant, in that I thought
the concern was getting some information 'out there', rather than the
    actual formal publishing, IYSWIM.

    I agree with your disagreement

While TOGs approach is realistic, it does not happen like that in a big
    organisation.

Hence why a CV needs to be tailored.

Start with the 2 pager and update/expand if felt necessary.

Unless it is formally published it will not be taken seriously in
terms of policy impact or career progression. Though I'm increasingly
not giving a flying **** about either of them.

It must be nice to have things you've done which you are actually
allowed to tell people about with violating NDAs.

Are you missing an 'out' there? That's your guilty conscience wanting
to tell us about the incident in the Paris tunnel/foundation
x/roswell/pick another one of your choice isn't it?
