My Mums car, a Renault Clio, 10 years old, 60k miles, FSH in good
condition, has developed a sudden, major fault in it's automatic gearbox
which she's been told will cost £1700 to repair (replacement
reconditioned 'box). The car is probably only worth £1700 or so when
    repaired.

Her inclination is to get shot of it and buy a new (to her) car. I
    suggested a Honda Jazz.

How much is a dead Clio worth and does it have ANY trade in value?

    "They all do that, sir"
Worth whatever the scrapman pays per tonne of metal these days.

A dealer wouldn't be interested at all.

Bung it on ebay with no reserve and a tenner start price. You might get
    lucky.

Wot they say, where is it? I ask because I know a man who also
has a clio auto and might make one from two.

Ahh, well not miles away but probably not worth much if my mate
collects it, I have no doubt he will pick it up if its a freebee but for
that distance dragging it would cost a few squid in fuel.
