  1. Interesting - I've never pre-booked a MOT in my life. The place which
usually does my MOTs just say to turn up.

I've also ridden a bike back with a fail and then ridden it back to the
dealer for repair. What a naughty boy I was.

I'm sorry, I don't understand this "MOT fail" term I keep seeing.

  3. Well in my case it referred to a brake disc that was thinner than the
minimum permitted. No MOT certificate was issued until it was rectified.
I confess I don't know if that is termed a fail or not. Explain your
    point your Spicness.

My point is that in 27 years of riding I've never had a bike fail an
MOT. I always check the bike over thoroughly myself before I take it
in, because I consider it a waste of time going if the bike might fail
on something. I'm lucky that I'm mechanically minded and have the tools
to do any work needed, other people aren't/don't and rely on dealers
and MOT stations to keep their bikes roadworthy.

So does mine, I insist on them writing my reg number in the big black
    appointments book!
The one they book their holidays in.
When I say it's for a vehicle on SORN they have no problem at all.

Yes you are lucky. If I took a bike to bits I could not reassemble it.

I fall into the second clueless and dependant category.

Not according to the plod who pulled a mate of mine taking an untaxed vehicle
    to a pre-arranged MOT.

  9. Correct, you do not need road TAX as long as the vehicle is booked into the
MOT garage (And obviously you are between your addy and theirs, not touring
    Scotland).

IIRC, providing you have booked an MOT at a station you can drive the
    car to and from there.

As the old MOT's have now been replaced by new ones that are kept on a
central database, providing your insurance us up-to-date you can even
    Tax your vehicle online.

Thanks. Btw, I'm not having a "I'm being a ****" time, I was just being
selfish for a while. I appear to have grown out of it because it didn't
    suit me.
Sounds like a plan, I shall consult my fellow pixies.

He was talking double bollocks - conventionally, if ANY part of the vehicle
is in contact with the road, it is supposed to be taxed, insured and MoT'd,
so if it is none of those things, a mere dolly (i.e. 2 wheels up, 2 wheels
down) will be no good in the slightest.

But in any case, the whole purpose of the pre-booking is so you can take an
otherwise-illegal car to the MoT man.

You'd hope for better from an Upholder of the Law...

Yes. It caused huge problems when my mates Guzzi was nicked.

TPG in Hove keep failing machines on warped disks, where other places
don't. General (trade) view is they don't test properly.

Fuckers failed the Guzzi, two drum braked MZs and an XS for warped
drums/disks. Haven't been back since - should have learnt my lesson
    sooner.

How do you check disks? The ones I had failed didn't pulse and were
    within service limits.

It needs to be insured for the journey to and from the MOT station. What
would have happened if you had hit someone?

If they pulse then generally they're warped. In all those years of
owning bikes I've only ever owned one bike that had a warped disc, and
that was caused by a clumsy tyre fitter catching the disc against the
side of the tyre changer when breaking the bead. Hagon sorted it for 30
quid. I can't understand how people warp discs in normal road use, I've
nevr done it and I use the front brakes quite hard.

In my case, the simple answer was, "Buy a ZZR600". With handy pre-warped
discs and downpipes that rotted through in 14 months, amongst other things.
All in all, seven warranty claims and a £350 cheque from Mr. Kawasaki for
    the inconvenience.

If the MOT was only done a couple of months ago, did you get the
new-style one (A4 size) rather than the ones we were used to? If so,
the information is held on a central database that they should have
access to. Or, I would imagine they should have access to it, seeing
as the DVLA has access to your insurance and MOT details on order for
you to actually purchase a replacement tax disc on-line.
