I think you'll find that once you have SORNed the vehicle, you can only
un-SORN it by filling in the correct form at the PO (if there is still
one open near to you, alternatively download the document from the DVLA
website and complete it), and producing your MOT certificate plus your
new replacement Registration Certificate (V5C). If you haven't
received your new V5C then you are not going to be able to tax the
    vehicle.

My AT failed on headlight aim - I can set them both level, but don't
know if that level is a fraction too high or too low. And the RHS bulb
was twisted a bit causing the beam to go up on the right.

Also the front brakes juddered a bit. Would have never been detected if
they hadn't used their brake-o-fail machine.

I was of the opinion that if a vehicle failed an MOT you could by
pre-arrangement take the vehicle somewhere to have the fault(s)
rectified. Our local garage does not do welding so if a sill needed
doing you can drive it elsewhere to have work done. But just searching
now I cannot find any proof of this.

This is true the vehicle must be insured in it's own right to be driven
by somebody else on their own insurance.

  6. This one's been thrashed to death on the car groups. Mostly it's not the
case, though your policy may vary.

  7. Easier to fail a drum-braked MZ on just about anything else
brake-related, I'd have thought. Like: "It doesn't work at all".

  8. My mate Niall did it on his Falco, on a track day. Overcooked the
    brakes, apparently. Replaced under warranty.

I could have lived with that, as you well know the 250s are marginal at
best, but this was for ovalled drums. Bastards.

That's my understanding and, IIRC, it says as much on the back of the MOT
    failiure form.

You un-SORN it by taxing it, the SORN expiring or changing keeper.

  12. Zactly, I've reviewed my policies in the past & never seen such a
requirement. As it happens I'll need to drive an uninsured card in a
week or so, so I'll check again - maybe.

I suspect that would count as "booked"

What you can't do, is for a general ride without an MOT.

No, you have to have a "pre-arranged" appointment.
Course you can. Who'd ever let little things like legalities stop
    them, eh?

I commuted for about 18 months on (3 seperate) bikes without MOTs. One
wasn't taxed either - naughty me. They were all insured, though.

Or have been left standing for months outside, and the rain has caused
the discs to rust, and since the water between the pads and disc
doesn't evaporate as quickly that bit of the disc rusts a tiny bit
more, giving you a slightly thinner disc at that point.

    Needs to, but wasn't.

I recall this argument being thrashed out a couple of times before in
UKRM and there being two distinct camps, one who are religious about
insurance, the other not being overly bothered about driving an
    uninsured vehicle occasionally.

    SP scribbled:
    Sorry Lesley but you're wrong.

When I unSORNed my AT I went down to the post office, handed them the
last tax/SORN notice (the letter you get asking you to tax/sorn it) and
asked the lady how to do it and she just scanned the bar code, asked to
see MOT & insurance, and gave me a tax disc in exchange for a few
    spondulas.

If you had bought a vehicle that was SORNed that'd be a different
matter, as the tax/SORN demand wouldn't be in your name, either would
the V5. I believe there's a form for change of owner which you can fill
out at the post office at the same time you get the tax, the PO need to
complete the change of owner form to be able to give you the tax. That
was the case anyway, what it is now with the new V5C I'm not sure.

Right enough, that's what I'd always thought. Bloody young coppers don't know
