What is the Freeware (or Cheapware) weapon of choice to make .avi files
into a DVD I can simply shove in a DVD player and, er, play.

I can convert them from AVI to VOB but Nero wont build the DVD.

....and incidentally your suggestion isn't available at the place I get my
    AVI files.

See my reply to Sweller but the other alternative is to buy a DVD player
that also handles AVI, DivX, XviD, etc, directly.

I have a DK Digital DVD-339 (since been superceded by later models) that I'm
    very happy with.
Despite being nearly 2 years old they (DK) still support it and there's been
two free firmware upgrades (loaded via CDR) to keep it up-to-date with the
    latest standards.

Oh and it plays commercial DVD's very well (multi-region).

I long since gave up bothering to author DVD's unless they're for distant
    family.

You have your licence back yes? Wtf are you doing messing about with
DVD stuff and posting in here? Go on, shoo, be off with you, take the
Guzzi out and give it a damn good thrashing. It's the right thing to
    do.
