Well, that Jesus bloke started it all. Crowd had to hang around for
    *three fucking days*.

Not Channel 4 it seems. LN could sign up to their campaign.
Unfortunately, it features a favourite UKRM 'howler':

"Make encores history. Gig justice, drop the crap, less & better songs."

  4. The answer is I haven't a clue.. but I don't think that encores came
about 'because people wanted them' either.

Since they are common in the classical world I suspect they came about
in an ad-hoc fashion when was then perpetuated - and then the habits of
the classical world transferred over to the non-classical world and
people do them 'because they always have done'.

I must admit it's classical and folk music with which I'm most
familiar. Reading the Channel 4 website, and comments about pop
concerts on here, it seems that what I still think is a good idea has
    been bastardised beyond recognition.

This is a shameless hijack of the thread, but I've noticed a new
convention becoming popular amongst heads of state. Mugabe is now
trying to pursuade the populace that the opposition is in league with
the UK and that a vote for him is the only way to prevent back-door
    re-colonialisation.

If that sounds familiar, it's how Dubya won his second term, only in
his case it was the war on tear. As a Guardian columnist neatly put it
a while back, if people are wise to you selling them dreams then try
selling them protection from nightmares instead. I can see it catching
    on.

Still time to go and see Chuck Berry before it's too late. Renowned for
playing for *exactly* one hour with no encore. He did it 15 years ago or
so when we went to see him, and apparently still does. Understandably as
he is over 80 I suppose, though apparently he will do one if paid extra.

Perhaps porl could indicate some key sections by running time. Sort of
in the way a certain kind of book falls open naturally in one place.
The rate of change of images in that piece, and many others these days,
is specially designed to keep your attention innit?

The one thing Zeitgeist doesn't claim is widespread use of subliminal
messages by the gummint. Perhaps it uses them itself?

Well, yes that's true for a (mainly) covers band in a pub.

I'm not sure it applies to major bands at major venues though, where
the band know they're coming back on and the crowd know they're coming
back on, usually purely from the fact that they haven't played their
    biggest & most popular track(s).

It would surely piss off the band if everyone *did* just bugger off
    though.

I almost added another paragraph about that. You have to realise that
pretty much every big band started as unknowns playing material that
no-one knew to semi-indifferent audiences. They'd have gone thru the
same good show = encore, bad show = none experience.

But once they get big, everyone is invested in their being an encore,
because it's part of the whole "we had a great time" thing. The
audience has paid 30 quid or whatever for a ticket, so they definitely
want an encore, cos that's part of the experience. So the band has to
plan for doing an encore, and the whole thing becomes standardised.

    See the post from Dentist.
I'm sure that it's happened when big bands have played shit gigs
