  1. One of my colleagues has just returned from 2 wks in Malaysia.
She has just given me a sweet made from Durian Fruit.
If you can imagine sucking raw sewerage off of a corroded aluminium block
you'll get some idea of the taste sensation I am currently
    experiencing......

You want[1] to try those garlic flavoured sweets they make out there...

    [1] Actually, no you don't.

  3. Heh,
I'm adjusted to some of the things that the Chinese and Taiwanese pass off
as sweets - e.g. dry compressed fish skin etc etc.
But nothing prepared me for the smell and taste of something thats meant to
    be a fruit !

I had some sweetened (partially-)dried yak sweets from China a couple of
    months ago.

I'll give most things meat-based a try, but I'm fucked if I'm *ever*
    touching those things again.

Many airlines in the Far East forbid the carrying of durian fruit on
board, because it smells so foul. Tastes OK, apparently - it's just the
    smell that's appalling.

Unlucky.. Durians do indeed smell like decomposing corpses left in the sun,
    but taste pretty good..

    Durian Ice Cream is fantastic!

Its sort of the case that up close, the smell is so overpowering it
    transforms into something else..

What I want to know is who the first person to eat one? Its like someone
discovering that dogshit is tasty... it may be, but *Im* never going to find
    out..

I just love Durian fruit. Really. I buy them occasionally [1] from the
13th quarter in Paris. Durian milk-shakes are really nice. The texture
is strange but the flavour nice and ripe.

A nice ripe fruit will really perfume the house. I've heard (and I
don't now if it's an urban myth) that some aircraft will not allow
people to fly with them, as they're too smelly.

[1] Because SWMBO's views on Durian fruit are not the same as mine.

I really like the description towards the bottom of the Wikpedia article
    that was posted...

"the aroma is akin to pig shit mixed with turpentine and onions"

I bet they fly off the shelf

    WTF are you talking about

it's the most beautiful tasting fruit in the world (unless you're one of
those people who prefers plastic cheddar to a mature stilton)

I bought one last month from a Chinese supermarket in Colindale

    - bootiful it was

    Try the real thing

  18. I'll have to pop in and buy one then for sure.

According to Fi the sweets do smell and taste just like the fruit.

I'd like to try the real thing before writing it off completely though.

I didn't like the sound of Chinese Thousand Year Old Eggs when they were
served to us at a banquet in Foshan, I thoroughly enjoyed them though, much
    to our hosts disappointment.

How long before Scots chip shops start coating them in batter and deep
    frying them?
