I may have been a little thick and been accepting friend suggestions
    thinking they're requests.

I think I've just about made friends with the whole of the UKRM group in
    the last day or so.

Now that I've got all these wonderful new friends who appear to be
leading such interesting lives that I'm feeling a little bit of pressure
to embrace this modern social networking thing.

I fear I may be doomed, how can I possibly compete with the likes of
    Nige's swearoblog ?

The first thing to do is lock down all your privacy settings. The
second thing to do is click 'Hide' against Mafia Wars, Farmville, & all
the other stupid games otherwise your feed will fill up with shite that
nobody's interested in but which the people who play them think
    everyone else is interested in.

    <and breathe>

Then hide BGN's feed if you've added him, unless you like reading about
the latest iPhone download or the size of his cock. That should do for
    starters.

Hover yer mouse at the right side of the central column level with the
person's name & a 'Hide' button appears. Click that & you get more
    buttons to play with.

  5. You could start by posting this, in the correct 'person', as a Facebook
    status update. e.g:

"fears he may be doomed, how can I possibly compete with the likes of
    @Nigel Ince's swearoblog?"

    Just saying...

  6. How did you not figure this out already? If I had to see all that shit,
I'd have killed my account a long, long time ago. Again.

P.S. you may want to add the Nicknames app too - search for nicknames &
it's the one with a red umbrella as the icon. Once you've added it,
click the 'Friends' link near the top you'll see which of your
    'friends' have been nicknamed.

  9. Sure that depends on whether he wishes to write in the 1/2/3' person?

  11. Ignoring the obvious 'you're old' retort....

While I agree that it's not an ideal UI, it's hardly the worst I've
ever used. Part of the problem is that it does too much to be simple.

What is it that you want to do and can't figure out?
Do you consider that this might be part of the reason for the
    aforementioned symptoms?

Same here, which is why I was astounded at my sudden popularity. Fairly
disappointing to realise I was creating the links myself and the
requests where actually suggestions. Which is why I agree with your
opinion on the interface being a bit strange. Normally I'm ultra
paranoid round facebook for that very reason.

Most of what it does is a load of old shit though. So I use Tweetdeck
for the news feed (also does Twitter, so rather handy) and rely on email
notifications when someone's commented, etc. Job done.

If you click around a bit on Facebook, there are RSS feeds for
notifications, links and status updates. So I actually read most
Facebook chatter via Google Reader (although any RSS reader would do it).

Tweetdeck allows two-way use though, it's not just a reader.

It sounds utterly hateful. I'm glad I never got involved.
