  1. That's kind of assumed when it says "to feel inordinate desire for
    what belongs to another"..

And that was the point of the original commandment - it was to tell
people that coveting other peoples goods lead you to breaking the other
commandments in order to get it (murder, theft etc etc).

If "Thou shalt not covet" is covered by the other commandments, then it should
be deleted in the next release. Stone tablets aren't exactly light to carry.
On the other hand, "The Nine Commandments" doesn't sound quite right, so maybe
we need one new law. How about "Thou shalt not hide thy light under a sockpuppet"?

Assumed by you maybe, but not by me - nor anyone else without an
ulterior motive I suspect. Desiring something more than the average
person in the street in no way means you're likely to become a criminal
to get it. I'm sure I've got an inordinate desire for an MV1000R & a
MacLaren F1, but I'm not even slightly contemplating robbing a bank to
    get them.
No, that's the way the original commandment has been interpreted. It's
that choice thing again. You choose to stick to the letter of the 'no
likenesses' commandment, but you choose to invent new meaning behind
the 'don't covet' one as it suits you better.

I'll go along with that, as long as 6 doesn't apply to wasps. In fact
adding a new one - "Thou shalt kill a wasp a day" would convert me.

  6. Ah - the old ulterior motive ploy. I wondered when that would make its
    appearance.
So what ulterior motive would this be? You obviously know what it is
(which kind of defeats the point of an ulterior motive) so would you
    mind enlightening me?
Where did I say "desiring more than the average person in the street"?
The fact is the behaviour that the 10th commandment is warning about is
where you want your neighbours possessions *and then break the Law to
    possess them*.

And that isn't my definition BTW - it's one that has been used by
    Rabbinical teachers for millenia.
Can I suggest you put a smidgeon of study into the answer? It's not as
simple as saying 'covet just means I want something'. For a start the
Law wasn't written in English (the Hebrew word translated as 'covet' is
'hamad') and lots of people (Jews & Christian alike) have put in lots
of time working out what it means.
No - I merely apply a little thought to the process once I realise that
it isn't quite as simplistic as you might wish.

And the fact is that commandment 10 *is* phrased quite differently to
    the others.

I've not heard of it being used a ploy, but anyway...
Interpreting something in a specific way to suit your aims - but I
think you knew that's what I meant.
"Inordinate" - which I interpreted as 'above average'.
    You've gotta be kidding!
All that time, & they still can't come up with a translation in modern
language that means what you say it means? If they're all so certain
that is the true meaning, then why not add the *and then break the Law
to possess them* bit to the translation, thus ending all confusion?
I've also applied a little thought to the process, & realised it is as
simple as I wish, & you're going to Hell for trying to twist it to suit
    your needs ;-)

They can substitute them for a local nasty - or go somewhere that has
wasps for their holidays & kill 365 whilst there.

Lots of people (Jews & Christian alike) have put in lots of time
working out what the commandments mean, & in this case, they've decided
    that 'neighbor' means 'MV dealer'.

  12. Actually - according to Websters it does..
The idea of it being a 'translation' appears to have passed you by. The
idea is that you translate the original into as close a match as you
can into the target language (which is why it's called a
    'translation'[1]).
Grammar changes are allowed as is some translation of idiom ("it finds
delight in my eyes" becomes "I like it a lot"). What isn't allowed is
mass insertion of stuff - that's the job of the commentary writers :)

    Burn baby burn!
