Hi all, I know I saw something here a while back but can't find it
    now, so ...

Could anyone point me in the direction of a decent web-host? It'll be
a small hobby site, small membership and the site will be used more as
a repository of information and to host a forum so members can keep in
contact easily. 1 gig max storage and probably less than 5 gig traffic
a month, indeed we reckon it'll likely be less than 1/10th of those
numbers, so cheap and cheerful is good, reliability and ease of use is
of more interest, so is cheap. We'd consider free web-hosts if the
adverts weren't too obtrusive, but 'the committee' reckon they can
afford up to maybe 50 quid a year ...... is this pie in the sky?

We know nothing of web-hosting, or indeed writing web-pages, so 'easy
enough for beginners to use' is also a good thing.

    Cheers.

US based - genuine 24/7 support - although I'm UK based I've used them
for my commercial stuff for 4 years now there's a selection of plans
from US$8.95 to whatever you want to pay.

I'd have to say steer well clear, based on my experience.

What exactly do you need and how do you feel about hosting it in London?

I do have access to a box in/near Telehouse that we rent space out on.

Email me, preferably using timo at the above domain.

We have already been recommended these by someone else and they do look
    reasonable, thanks.

I have been with Easyspace for years. Not the cheapest. Basic from 30
    quid a year.

I'm surprised by the limits on the size of MySQL database. Might be ok
for a forum but not for a photo album. Or am I missing something?

No MySQL at all on the most basic package anyway. Dunno about photo
albums, but I don't use BLOBs in databases anyway. I prefer to store a
    URL to the object.

Mostly inertia that I don't switch to somewhere cheaper, but the
reliability is good. I had one issue with PHP/ mySQL , but they were
quite helpful in sorting it out, even though it was partly my fault.
I also see that I have some Google advert credits I didn't know about to
    spend.

In fact I might well look at purple cloud for some extra space, or now I
have one box running 24 hours (the Puppy Linux 'torrent box') I ought
really get a web server running on that and make use of the 500Gb of
    disk space hanging of it.

That might be how it's done by the hosting site anyway, IYSWIM, in
terms of which limits any photos actually affect.

Possibly. It would be beyond my current knowledge level, plus I'm not
bothered as Purple Cloud only have a total storage limit anyway.

    <has a quick look at coppermine site>

As far as I can see the only limit on images will be the space you have
available for the albums folder. No mention of configuring that to be on
    another host though.

Even with my pikey 150MB mysql limit I think it will be able to cope
with the 3Gb of storage I have available.

A good point though that Paul is best to go for a package that includes
mySQL if he wants to easily set up a forum or photo gallery.

No an issue given Paul's requirements though.

The French branch are very good, they respond quickly to e-mails or faxes
and their servers have (AFAIK) shown 100% uptime since I registered the
first domain with them in 2007. *.org is =~ 6¤ a year, which is
dirt-cheap. You get ten e-mail addresses (or unlimited, if you set up your
own MX), one MySQL DB, and all the usual bells and whistles that come with
    web hosting these days.

True, but I meant only total storage limit as opposed to separate
storage limits for database and other parts of the site.

Interesting discussion and thanks for the info. Storage or Bandwidth
is unlikely to be a problem, the last website they had (before I
joined) was about 40MB total and they achieved as a max 600 unique hits
a month. We are likely to expand, but not stupidly so, though there
are plans for a document store, 4 page pdf booklets, and a small 'where
we went this weekend' picture gallery.
