OT FOAK what kills coil packs in peugeot 206?

    Car 03 1.4 206, FSH about 55k miles

1st coil pack (original as far as I know) went in November, replaced
with pattern part by garage I got car from nearly 2 years back and who
    have been servicing/MOTing it since.

2nd coil pack - that pattern part above - went in early Feb, replaced
by Essex AA man (who said 'pukka' when it was all fixed - bless)
driving me to local motor parts to get another pattern one so I could
    get on with job.

Last week, timing belt (6 years/60k miles) and new front discs and
pads done while I didn't need car for half term. Cost of coil pack
that went above knocked off bill.

Today, set out for school in Lancs, got 3 miles, engine management
light comes on and it beeps at me and is obviously misfiring. I limp
it to garage, it isn't timing but another coil pack gone - this time
one section (2nd valve?) burnt out. I get shitty courtesy car and
carry on, leaving mine at garage.

He's put a proper peugeot part on it rather than pattern (ouch) but
there is still a slight misfire and no wiring fault he can trace.
Tomorrow he's going to try and fix the slight misfire and work out
what has caused 3 coil packs to blow in a couple of months.

I also need to ring Essex part place and see what they've got to say
about a coil pack lasting 3 weeks.

Any ideas? New spark plugs have gone in with each new coil pack.

Mrs Boxer has a Clio that has coils that are part of the spark plug
    cap. Are yours the same?

Hers eats coils every 18 months to 2 years. The pattern ones either
work or go within 3-4 weeks. The Renault ones last the 18 months-24
months but cost £30 a pop compared to the pattern part lottery that
    costs £12 each.

Tried everything but the answer from everywhere is "they all do that
    sir".

We keep 2 spare coils in the boot just in case. That way if it breaks
down it is quick and easy to fix. Mrs B can change them herself now
and she finds cork screws too difficult for her mechanical competence.

I went to look and got as far as the door before remembering the car
is still in the garage. Doh. I don't think so, it's a four limbed
thing that goes over the spark plugs.
These are 70 plus vat for the pattern ones.
I have a feeling this will be going the same way. What would make them
    go like that?
So she doesn't have to do spark plugs at the same time as the spark
plugs are part of it on the clio?

No plugs are separate, If it still runs crap I check it over and deal
with the plugs when she gets home. To be honest the dodgy coils have
only messed up one plug in the 9 years since we bought it new.

You tried the Pug forums see if it is a common problem?

We were lucky the first time the Clio played up the AA man who came
out to Mrs B started going on about he was fed up with bloody clio
coils. Luckily she asked him a load of searching questions and
established it was common, AA men all carry at least on clio coil in
their van, that they charge twice the normal price for the coils they
supply and that it took less than 5 minutes to swap them once you know
which one had gone. Prat then explained to her how to spot the duff
one .Renault say if one goes you should replace all 4 at the same
    time!

    Jude's 2003 2.0l 206cc has never broken down. It's relatively low
mileage, I suppose, at less than 50k (km) but has only been serviced
the once, AFAICR. Twice, perhaps, now I come to think about it.

  10. ISTR there's a modified part, and also that failed coils can kill ECUs.
Personally, I'd buy OE, not pattern.

I had a never broken down 307 which got to 6 years old and started
developing faults for fun. In the last 6 months it's done a radiator,
wheel bearing, horn, exhaust, front anti-roll bar, and now appears to
have warped discs and a dodgy automatic choke as well....

Pug 406 2 litre petrol , coil pack lasted 3 years/70k miles in my ownership
(sold it a month ago) with not a single glitch. It could have been the
original in which case it had done 170k milles.

That was on the up to 2002 models, supposedly fixed on these.
Have done, still misfiring, so maybe a spike to ECU.

Funnily enough I've just had a test drive in a Kia Rio. The problem
with the 206 is an injector, they're fixing that today then giving me
a quote on trade in. I shall have a think.

    Anyone got a Kia?
