Right, I know the likes of Auvache is probably still have a black and
white but the rest of you probably have some experience with current
    TV's. :)

So, have a budget of up to £450ish tops and am after something in the
    40" range.

Now, I don't do any gaming, don't have a blu ray or PS3 and have no
intention of paying for HD channels etc.

I would if possible like to find a way to use the tv screen as a
computer monitor to browse online / email etc wirelessly through the
use of something like an av sender but on further research this looks
like a no no as the wifi may interfere with this I do have a specific
reason for wanting to do this [1]

Moving on to the tech itself, I've found 4 tellys in the range

    LG 42" at
    http://www.dixons.co.uk/gbuk/lg-42ld450-42-full-hd-lcd-tv-04877700-pdt.html

    Sony Bravia 46"
    http://sonytvreviews.co.uk/sony-bravia-kdl46ex403ukdl46ex403video-review
cheap-hd-tv/ which comes in at £550 with a trade in on another tv
though is showing out of stock everywhere which makes me think the last
one i saw in the shop is literally the last one so could be an old
    model?

    Samsung 43" at
    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/samsung-ps43d450-43-hd-ready-plasma-tv-1007
8456-pdt.html which is a fecking odd size but hey ho.

    and

    panasonic 42"
    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/panasonic-viera-tx-p42c3b-42-hd-ready-plasma-tv-09716608-pdt.html

The above are a mix and match of lcd led and plasma and im not bothered
about which we go for unless someone has a particular recommendation?

I like the look of the LG, it does all I need, good price and it's very
thin so good for wall hanging which is our plan anyway (concrete wall)
but Im put off by the fact it's an LG and feel (possibly wrongly) that
    they're a cheaper make.

    So anyone got any advice?

[1] One of our laptops is near on shagged screenwise, I have this idea
that I could use this connected to the tv (preferably wirelessly) then
I could have a wireless keyboard and mouse and effectively use the tv
as a computer when required, or am i talking shite there? I don't want
a telly with supposed internet capability as it seems only to be
capable of watching you tube etc.

We just bought this (about 2 weeks ago) for my mum ... down to £449
from £749. Incidentally, buying the bundle including stand via Quidco
    makes an even better deal!

    http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/panasonic-viera-tx-l32d28b-p-32-full-hd-led-tv-purple-06219079-pdt.html

Which, while it's only 32", is pretty damn good as a TV, in fact it's
fucking good, is also pretty damn good as a computer monitor. We tried
it with a Dell Latitude E5500, our 'newest' laptop, and an IBM T23 our
oldest laptop and it worked extremely well with both using a standard
VGA cable. I'd guess if the laptop you have has a HDMI cable it'd be
    even better .. ;)

Dunno how it'd fare with the screen size increased though ..

I've had a 42" plasma LG on the wall in the workshop[1] for the last 3
or 4 years. It lives in a shitty, dusty, sparky, smokey environment and
    has never skipped a beat.
Look closely at the model ranges though, cos I think they do economy and
    business class.

[1] Don't ask, it's a working workshop and it serves a business need.

Not sure whether mine's high or low, but we got a LG 47" LCD last year
and I'm very happy with it. cost around €699, IIRC, in a sale.

I still don't get the plasma ones, with high gloss screens. I mean, do
some people just not have windows?

This was from a high st. hifi shop, bought mainly because it had the
right inputs. It appeared to be part of the standard home consumer
    range, BICBW.

It gets more servicing than the one in the living room mind, an air line
up it's vents every few weeks.

Turnpikes spellchecker still makes me smile after all these years. It
    suggested 'whiffing' for 'hifi'.

I bought a lovely one from Richer Sounds (posted a few weeks back
about it) - well over the budget (and requirements) but a lovely bit
of kit. I am still awed by the ambilight but its not for everyone
    (23:9 ratio, 56") - playing PS3 games is fantastic :)

Believe me our budgets tight, we'll still have to get a stand or wall
    mount on top:-/

This is the thing, how do i know if it's high or low end?

I guess in my budget it's possibly low end as its led too the one we're
looking at, the model has good reviews off amazon though.

You are aware, I take it, that the so-called LED ones can be either
plasma or LCD, and simply have an LED backlight? Personally I couldn't
see why the back-lit ones were better, so we didn't bother.

With TVs, "better" is mainly subjective.

Having chatted to a Sony salesman at the weekend, the only things he
could come up with was in favour of the LED ones was less energy use,
size (LED will be slimmer) and personal preference on how the image was.

I think the £899 one I have my eye on is a bit out of Donnie's budget
    though.

Indeed it will be. Yes the slimness of it is certainly appealing as is
the energy use and we've seen it in the showroom and like the look of
the display and compering it to some others on display had a better and
sharper picture then even dearer ones.

Oh and yes, I have noticed that on one site it says it's led and the
other says lcd with led backlight.

For this bit, I would just tuck the laptop behind the telly and use
something like a wireless keyboard and mouse. I do that with a small
    form factor nettop.

So you need to go to Richer Sounds. For 40" and LED will be fine. Plasma for
50" and over screens. Take their advice and best deals. You wont go far
wrong with sony if they have it in budget.

If you can get something with built in Freeview AND Freesat HD

Make sure you take their no quibble 5 year maintenance package (excellent)
Get something with a VGA or DVI in connection and perhaps Ethernet.
