I so so wish that some considerate govmint would hand the Beeb a right to
screen all Premier Football free to air as they see fit.

    Is that a slight whoosh?

It would crucify Murdoch.... and the Premier league owners and players.

Well that's perhaps a laudible aim, but if the price to pay is more
football on normal BBC channels then I'm with Krusty on this. Keeping
the stuff where I can't see it is about the only positive service that
    Sky provide, IMV.

Beeb could put it all on a dedicated HD Freesat/View channel

Just out of curiosity, do you have to pay for all HD? I have cable TV,
and I get ~30 or 40 HD channels with a standard subscription. There
are a few "deluxe" HD channels, but I can't be bothered with them.

FWIW, I know you already bought your TV, but I've had a Samsung DLP
50" for ~5 years now, and it's still great. I guess DLP has gone out
of fashion, but I love mine.

Most of the normal free channels, i.e. the terrestrial ones, are also
available free in HD (via satellite, at least). One or two exceptions,
but then we're only talking abouit half a dozen or so anyway.

    Yes.

There is mention of some low-power stations remaining on the analog
system. Those are very few and far between. Essentially, the only
broadcast TV we have had since June 2009 is digital.

dunno what dlp even is :)

as for the hd stuff, i think if i want any sky hd stuff, yes its an
extra tenner a month! plus a new box and £60 for an "engineer" to come
    and plug it in!

This telly has a freeview HD tuner built in and apparantly with freesat
HD, so ill get that sorted first and go from there I think.

  13. Only if you want the Sky HD channels.
Good move and you might find the free HD (BBC 1, BBC HD, ITV1, C4) are
all you want. Eventually all channels wil be HD as a matter of course.

Nail and head there, pretty much. Have found them all on HD on't telly
    :)

I would indeed like Sky 1 as HD though I have to admit but I will learn
to live without it I suspect :)

Having checked last week it seems I need to wait another year until I
get HD on freeview at Chez Boots.

We're currently on BT Vision, but that doesn't do HD, so I'm looking at
getting a used Humax Freesat box to make use of the existing satellite
dish (left by previous owners). If that's all good, I'll upgrade my
TV, get a quad LNB put on and get a decent Freesat HD with recorder.

Looking at the rate for used Freesat boxes on eBay I reckon if I can
get one just cheap enough[1] I'll be able to flog it and get my money
    back.

[1] I'm in no particular hurry at the moment and I've been outbid on
several auctions so far as I want a bargain!

  17. Yebbut, didn't you imply the telly has Freesat HD capability too? In
which case, just hook it up to a dish.

Nah, I'd need to get a decoder and put a dish on the house which would
lower the tone of the neighbourhood. For the amount of TV I watch I'll
wait for the freeview offering, the occasional bit in HD I DL from
    thebox.
