It's not so much the phone that's important, but the
    connection to the PC.

I've got a VTA1000 Gateway and it works great with a
    bog-standard DECT phone.

Mind you, you can search around on ebay and get one of
these with a cheap DECT phone thrown in cheaper than
    buying the gateway alone.

    I got mine here:

out of curiousity, how do you make a Skype call - is there a leading
digit you add to tell it to route via Skype rather than your landline?

Just found the following on the end of an ebay advert. Sounds like
it's setup to use Skype as a default and you can chose other operators
    by dialling a #prefix.
    ------------------------------------------------
    Placing Calls:

Press the offhook button on the Northwestern Bell 36297 cordless phone
handset and you will hear dialtone.

To place a call to another Skype user just dial a 1-2 digit speed dial
number you have associated with that Skype user's name and stored in
the VTA1000's phone book OR simply look up the person's name using the
cordless handset's built in phone directory and press the send key.

To place a "Skypeout" call to a user with a regular phone simply dial
the telephone number you wish to call including the country code.

To place a SIP call, dial #0 followed by the number you wish to call.
You may also further select placing your calls over up to 10 different
SIP networks by additionally dialing #0 to #9 before the number.

To place an IAX2 call, dial #1 followed by the number you wish to call.
You may also further select placing your calls over up to 10 different
IAX2 networks by additionally dialing #0 to #9 before the number.

When you are finished hang up.

When incoming Skype, SIP or IAX2 calls arrive you will hear ringing. Go
    offhook to answer the call.

To redial the last number just go offhook and dial ##.
