I think the point is you have to work it out for yourself.

We've switched mainly to Lindt Excellence too, but I do still like G&B
Maya Gold occasionally. Melted, it makes a lovely filling for a sweet
    pancake.
I shall be waiting until 3rd May, when hopefully a ride to Bruges will
see me stock up from The Chocolate Line.

  8. Well yes. You, know that, I know that and even educated fleas know
that. But the majority of the population wouldn't know what the
scientific method was if it sprayed itself pink and tap-danced across
    their TV screen..
Again you miss the point. The mass public believed him "because he was
a scientist". Like believing the latest pronouncments of a great high
    prophet..

  10. Could be - what I was trying to say is that religion requires
spirituality but spirituality doesn't require religion..

  14. Well quite. I know how I meant to spell it and that's all that counts
    :)

    local animal sanctury..

  16. I may have used a bad example.. But hey - I'm not a scientist so you
    can ignore my fatwas..

  17. Indeed it was a bad example!
Well - they certainly *used* to. And still probably do (condom use
    anyone?).
'Religion' isn't a unified force any more than science is. I (for
example) am happy to encompass both - each in their own sphere of
    influence.
And if the religion stops at 'because' then it's failing. *Everything*
should be able to be explained (of course the answer may comes down to
"because God wills it" which is very close to 'because'..)

And I agree with all your points about science - but how many of the
average 'people in the street' know that?

  19. Which is (kind of) what I'm saying - people are deeply ignorant about
science (in the main) and so any pronouncement (first or second hand)
from a 'scientist' is accepted on faith.
Well quite. Anyone with a vague smattering of physics would laugh at
    them..
So people like Boyle are not 'real scientists'? The guy that
    promulgated Boyles Law?
There were 'real scientists' (Boyle, Newton, Kepler) working then.
And it works by magic (as far as most people know).
Err.. not really. I must be humour-resistant today.
